Self Examination

Decision-making was never my strong suit. From the smallest of choices to some of the more important decisions, I have found that it is never easy for to decide what I want to do. As I have gotten older I have discovered that when I am passionate about something it is so much easier to come to terms with my choice because I feel validated by my decision. Choosing to study and become a Clinical Mental Health Counselor is one of the best decisions that I have made and I get excited thinking about this journey in my life. The main reasons I want to become a counselor is because I have a deep desire to help others, I love studying psychology, and because of my personal history. Choosing Counseling

Those needs include the need to be in control, the need to be correct, the need to feel and receive affection, and the need to make money. My need to be in control stems from my personality and liking things to be and go a certain way. Living in a house in which I had little control made me desire the need to want for my life to go a certain way. I will manage this need with clients by remembering that the counseling sessions are not about me and I need to help the conversation move along in a way I feel will be the most beneficial for my clients. I also have a need to be correct. I have always prided myself in being able to have the right answers so I would be seen as an intelligent individual. I will manage this need with clients by going through my own personal growth and coming to the realization that my clients are not coming to me to hear that I am right and they are wrong especially when it comes to another’s life and mental health. It is important to be aware of one’s abilities so it is easier to know what one can approve on. It is also good to celebrate what one is good at especially on more difficult days. My strengths as a beginner counselor include being patient, mindful, trustworthy and optimistic. Some of my weaknesses include my tendency to interrupt others while they speak, focusing on the tiny details as opposed to the bigger picture, and controlling my bodily movements. My patience comes from the many jobs that I have had over time working with children from kindergarten to eighth grades. Working with children has made me fully aware of how to stay positive and focused while waiting for any type of answer or response from someone. I have learned that just because something is obvious to me does not mean that it is obvious to another individual. Patience will come in handy as a counselor because it takes clients time to have breakthroughs and work through their concerns and it is the job of the counselor to help the self discovery process along but not to give all the answers or rush the clients just to move the process along
