Over the time teaching in public schools has changed constantly. Even if it had to do with prohibiting faculty to discriminate students and another faculty all the way to a form created by Barack Obama called Race to the Top. Race to the Top is created to push a wave of change in education making every state compete with each other to get federal grants in the center of a recession.
Now aspiring the United States to be at a higher rank with each other, will make the United States to be more competitive with other countries around the country. In order for the United States to keep up with the other countries, they have to change the way of teaching in schools. Which brings me to Common Core, I am currently being taught with the methods of Common Core. The goal of Common Core according to Dr. Susan Berry it is aimed to "close the achievement gap between white and minority students and make U.S. students "college and career ready." ' (Dr. Susan Berry) Common Core being the new teaching way is a big issue in my community. I am a senior in high school, but in a program where I take my classes at a community college allowing me to get up to two years of college done while still being

The grades before that will still provide the students the teaching needed to be successful in the classes in the future. For the students to be excited to go to college in the future they need to have exposure to the college life. The students should take field trips to college campus ', have students attending the colleges at the moment come to schools and share their testimony on what they experience. Expose the students to have an idea of many different careers that exist. Which will be at a college and career fair, where the students can speak with a person at the college or doing that same
“To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade” (What Parents Should Know, n.d.). Children are entering a world that is requiring more and more than before. Society is changing meaning education must change to keep up with society. “The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the country and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs” (What Parents Should Know, n.d.). The focus is to allow students to think critically and be able to problem solve; skills needed in life. The Common Core State Standards are also providing ways for teachers to track each student’s progress as they grow and learn throughout the year. Common Core has many good qualities, but nothing is perfect. There will always be issues no matter the
The movie “The Class Divided” was a very inspirational movie because it taught a lesson on discrimination and racism. The film covers Jane Elliot experience with the “eye-color” exercise and it shows how the participants responded to being a victim of discrimination. The teacher who came up with the exercise was a third grade –teacher that wanted to explain to her kids the reasons behind Martin Luther King death. She divided each class she taught up by their eye color and treated them according to whatever eye color was more superior that day. Her lesson influenced and inspired the younger kids and older adults because it taught them a life learning lesson that could stick with them for years to come.
Eventually, the problem is not with having Common Core, but the matter is with the way how it is done and applied.
The Common Core State Standards are not strong enough to stand alone. They are an important element in the universal learning of mathematics. When the Common Core State Standards are on their own, they cannot produce the achievement that needs to happen in this country to be competitive in the 21st century. “Other factors are critical to realizing the potential of the Common Core: Substantial opportunities for ongoing professional development, accommodations in teacher evaluation systems, ample funding for education, funding for research and implementation of Common Core assessments, and adequate state funding” (Supporting the Common Core). Everyone that is a part of the education system has to understand that regular improvement takes time. It is going to take the long- term dedication to support Common Core State Standards even if it may fail at first and does not show
learning is different for every child. People have numerous ways of interpretting information and understanding data. This of course leads to differing ways of teaching. The united States has recently fallen behind in the international education scene. On the Program for International Student Assessment ,an international test to quantify learning, America was ranked 14th in reading, 17th for science, and 25th for mathematics. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/07/us-falls-in-world-education-rankings_n_793185.html These findings have very significant consequences on the United States and its students. This lack of educational superiority in an age of an increasingly global economy will spell out an inability to compete economically and increased poverty in America. Something has come to change this tide of incompetant learning or in reality incompetant teaching. This program that seeks to change learning in America is the Common Core State Standards(CCSS). The Common Core State Standards are different from those of the no child left behind act and are said to be better in many ways. According to the national conference of state legislators "the objective of CCSS was to identify and develop a common set of core knowledge and skills mastery in mathematics and English language arts that every American high school graduate would need have mastered in order to enter college or a career ready to succeed." http://www.ncsl.org/research/education/common-core-state-standards.asp
After completing my thirty hours of fieldwork in John S. Martinez Magnet School, I am more motivated than before to become a teacher. By observing my mentor teacher, I have realized the amount of effort and patience that goes into being a teacher, which is more than people would think. Some students are on different levels than others, or some kids ask to go to the bathroom constantly, or just breaking up the students side conversations when they should be paying attention. Maybe it is the content that the kids are learning that keeps them restless, but they are held to reasonable standards, according to the Common Core. The students should be learning a certain number of skills and information throughout the school year so they can advance to the next grade level feeling prepared. The Common
I have been taking advantage of educational opportunities such as AP classes and Honors throughout high school because these courses will prepare me for college. In addition, an AP class will help me save money on tuition, and it will also help me graduate sooner. I decided to take my first AP class my sophomore year because I was encouraged by one of my previous teachers. I am glad that I took AP Spanish Language and Culture my sophomore year because that gave me an idea of how much work to expect when I attend college. Since, I was very dedicated to passing the AP test, I developed new study skills such as asking questions, making flashcards, and taking cornell notes. All of these study skills were very helpful because I passed the AP exam.
Every student learns differently and needs a different approach. If I am able to implement Common Core Students, and still reach all of my students, I am all for it. I agree that something needs to be done for the students to help them be more successful throughout their school year, and beyond. Students in Alaska sadly have been known to be below other students nationally and Common Core may be just the thing, to give them the needed boost. I have some students who would love to go to a college in the lower 48, but feel they would never be accepted because “Alaska’s kids just are not as smart as them other kids”, as quoted from some of my students. I know it will take time for my students and I to acclimate to the new, but I am going to give Common Core Standards a chance with an
On February 17, 2009, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was signed into law (US Dept of Education). According to the Executive Summary of the US Department of Education’s website the purpose of this act was to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and provide funding for education. To encourage education reform at the state level, the competitive grant program, “Race to the Top,” was implemented. This allowed states to apply for grants, provided that certain education reform was taking place within states’ schools. One particular condition under this campaign has led to much debate within our education system, implementing a pay system based on a teacher’s academic performance and the methods used to determine this (US Dept of Education).
The three students I focused on all struggled because they had a partial understanding of how to use a protractor. These students were confused about which way they should measure their angle. Instead of following the numbers the way their angle opened, they measured it from the opposite side. This resulted in a large number when they were measuring an acute angle. These students still had a partial understanding of how to use their protractor because they set it up correctly. The angle measurement they should have had was 57 degrees. These students’ answers were around 123 degrees. This means that their protractors were set up correctly, they were just looking at the wrong side.
The NCLB was passed by Congress in 2001 and later signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2002 (“No Child Left Behind Act.” 1). It regulated public education in elementary and secondary schools and sought to “improve student performance, hold schools accountable for student progress, and provide assistance and options for students in failing schools” (“No Child Left Behind Act.” 1). President Barack Obama’s RTT is a series of competitive grants that have been awarded to states willing to embrace the administration's favored policies to improve public schools (Lyndsey, 3). Lyndsey established, “Race to the Top has been controversial among teachers unions, which have argued that federal tax dollars should be spent equally among school districts instead of creating ‘winners and losers.’” (3). Instead of forming a sense of fairness among schools, Race to the Top has placed labels on schools. Furthermore, the Common Core State Standards are a set of uniform expectations for American students in English language arts and mathematics (“Common Core” 1). The standards – assigned to students in kindergarten through 12th grade – are designed to prepare students for college and the workforce (“Common Core” 1). Many claim that these standards allow the federal state and territorial governments to control school systems (“Common Core” 1). If they hadn’t already, most states had planned to implement Common Core State Standards in the 2014-2015 school years. While these acts were supposed to improve the educational system, they failed to deal with the real matters at
We must provide our teachers with adequate time and training to implement the Common Core Standards, and it’s important that our teachers and administrators emphasize and promote the concept that every student is uncommon from every other
Through the use of Extrinsic Proofs, I can include myself as a Proximate Authority. Through this authority, I will know about the Common Core based off of being present while it was administered to schools. The Common Core was started in 2009. This method was a way that educators could make sure students around the country are learning the same. This meant that a student in California will learn the same things that a student in New York would. The fact that 20.2 million people are attending college as of 2015, means that when the speech is delivered in 5 years t hat number should be hitting the 50 million range. The Common Core sets standards that are good enough to get a student through their first year of a college credit English course. Being part of the product of the Common Core makes me a
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. The reason the course was extended for them was because they were struggling with the work that was required for this qualification, but as the col...
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
