The debate on how to raise ones ' child is something that has been argued over a long period of time and most recently due to the sudden increase in child births around the world. What has really been brought into the discussion though is the type of parenting styles that are out there. There are the lenient parents who give their children room to grow and freedom to do what they please because they believe that is what is best for them. Then on the other side there are tiger parents. Tiger parents are defined as strict or demanding parents who push their children to be successful academically by obtaining high levels of scholastic and academic achievement. They are not able to go around having fun and making friends like everyone else which ends up hurting their social skills and even their self esteem. A recent study from the University of California shows that children who grow up with these tiger moms are most likely to suffer from depression and behavioral problems later on in life (Rivas).The intense pressure and responsibility that is placed among those children is also something that they shouldn’t have to face at such an early stage. Some children aren 't able to deal with all that and later grow up feeling as a failure for not living up to their parents standards. The way in which tiger moms raise their children has also affected the way in which society looks at them. It has created a stereotype of the perfect child who gets perfects grades and can do just about anything. However if a child isn 't able to live up to this it causes for them to feel a certain way about themselves and makes them think that their life is a failure for not being able to live up to their according stereotype. A study from the Florida International University agrees with this and also states "The children with intrusive parents were more likely to be overly critical of themselves, and this tendency increased over the years. When a child fails they are able to see the errors that they made and are determined to fix them or even just to move on to something better which is why I think western parenting has a better understanding on the issue. With this type of parenting style they are able to build up a child 's character, social skills, and their self esteem. Assistant professor at the University Of Singapore Ryan Hong conducted some research over parenting styles and concludes that if you must be a Tiger Mom, encourage rather than pressure children. Let children make mistakes. It teaches them to be more dependent and not have so much pressure on themselves (Hong). They allow the children to do the activities that they enjoy in which at the end creates a better relationship between them. With all of this in effect I think that even though western parents may not be able to produce such prodigies at an early age they are still able to make successful children who strongly believe in what they do and wont have all those damaging effects that children from tiger parents
