The argument on whether or not the death penalty should be used on criminals in the Michigan and other states without the death penalty is very diverse and complex. Many studies have shown, that the death penalty does not deter crime. Every year, hundreds of people are murdered in Michigan. The proponents of the death penalty argued that if Michigan was a death penalty state, our murder rate would be much lower. History and data tell a different story. In fact, more murders occur in death penalty states than non-death penalty states. According to Death Penalty Information Center, in 2013, there were 4.72 murders per 100,000 people in death penalty states compared with 3.88 murders per 100,000 people in non-death penalty states. Further data suggests that murder deterrence is not reduced by the death penalty. In my opinion, although the penalty may be a vehicle to give the victim’s families, a sense of justice, it does nothing to reduce the murder rate, and therefore the death penalty should be completely eliminated.
There are many instances where murders have taken place, and the death penalty has failed to deter those crimes. One prime example is the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, where 12 students and one teacher were massacred two killers. Another example is the Sandy Hook shooting where a crazed killer took the life of 26 elementary school children and teachers, without fearing the repercussions of the death penalty. The punishment of life in prison is a greater deterrent, than the death penalty. According to Lawrence Katz of Harvard University, “Using annual state-level data for the period 1950-1990,…there is little evidence in support of a deterrent effect of capital punishment as presently adminis...

...rgument against the death penalty is that you can’t fix a wrong by committing another wrong. The government cannot tell people that murder is wrong, by sentencing people to death, and killing them. It just doesn’t sound right. Finally, the killing of another human being, will never bring back the dead. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “An eye for an eye would make the whole world blind”. I would rather have a person who has committed the crime of murder spend the rest of his life, locked up in a cage, to suffer for the crime he committed. Further, the family will have closure, and know that the criminal is locked up, and will never see the day of light again. The world seems to be accepting the words of Mahatma Gandhi by moving towards life imprisonment. Further, data supports that the death penalty is not a greater deterrent to the crime of murder.
