In 2013, there were 12,253 recorded homicides in the United States. With that number the U.S. has 3,002 prisoners who have been convicted of the heinous crime that is homicide. The country has practically deemed these inmates too dangerous for them to be involved with society. So the question is, what is the country to do with them? A method to get rid of unwanted criminals, that has been in use since the ancient times, is something that is now called the death penalty. The death penalty is where the criminals are killed, hanging or beheading being the old way to do it, all the way up to today where lethal injections are used to kill the criminals. However, if this insures that the person will never commit the same crime again it is a feet we need to be able to take. When a criminal receives a life sentencing, this doesn’t mean that they are prevented from killing ever again. As stated before, there are too many risks with keeping convicted homicide criminal alive much less behind bars. As Kent Scheidegger, JD, Legal Director of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation, has said, “...an executed death sentence absolutely guarantees the killer will never kill again. A life sentence does not. There are many cases of people killed by murderers who were paroled, escaped, killed within prison, or who arranged murders from within the prison…” (Source 14) Scheidegger said it plain and simple, not getting rid of the criminals means a strong possibility of them killing again, even if they spend the rest of their time in prison. These criminals could also escape the prison, have someone else kill for them in their name, their possibilities are many even behind bars.
