Crimes are serious matters that take place continuously. When it comes to the punishment that a criminal must receive, it is often difficult to have mercy. The most rational punishment is imprisonment. However, there are various people that agree to enforce torture or even capital punishment on many criminals. In order to create nations that provide equality and freedom, The United Nations established The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the declaration, Article 5 states that individuals must not be tortured or punished cruelly, for it is considered inhumane(2). Although the declaration does not say if the death penalty is included as cruel treatment, it can still be considered immoral because death is an irreversible punishment. While many people disagree with eliminating capital punishment, imposing the death penalty on a criminal is not necessary for it is unreliable and does not respect the quality of human life.

...ng criminals. While the death penalty may seem like a suitable method to punish an individual, it simply leaves more distress than it should. Capital punishment is not reliable for the fact that there have been many innocent people on death row, and it costs an abundance of money. In addition, it does not respect the quality of human life, for solitary confinement and the lethal injection tortures the prisoner in two harsh manners. Unfortunately, the death penalty is a method that many states in the United States allow. The number of both crimes and executions continue to rise. In conclusion, capital punishment is a punishment that no person, regardless of the crime they committed should face. While many are still in favor of this cruel punishment, it is morally wrong, as the death penalty not only created a physical death, but an agonizing mental death as well.
