"Death row is a nightmare to serial killers and ax murderers. For an innocent man, it 's a life of mental torture that the human spirit is not equipped to survive." A quote by John Grisham that perfectly depicts the conflict associated with capital punishment. Ask anyone what their opinion is regarding the death sentence and you will surely be bombarded with passionate beliefs and convictions on both sides of the debate. What exactly are the pros and cons that come with condemning criminals to die? I will examine deterrence, the costs associated with life in prison versus death row, and how often the wrongly convicted are sentenced to death.

Surprisingly, the death penalty incurs substantially greater expenses than those associated with sentencing someone to life in prison. The costs mainly file from the legal process, considering the extra lawyers involved and endless appeals that follow. On average, a death penalty case costs 1.2 million compared to the $740,000 that comes with sentencing someone to life without parole. The cost prohibitive elements are not limited to the legal proceedings. Housing also contributes to the exorbitant costs, due to the complexity of containing a maximum security prisoner on death row. Additional correctional officers are also required to ensure the safety of both the inmate and staff. In the abstract, one could argue that the death penalty helps cut costs in the courtroom. Consider a case where the death penalty is being sought. If the defendant 's lawyer uses the death penalty as a bargaining tool, they could convince the accused to plead guilty to life without parole. Though there are those who believe capital punishment is worth every penny, the expenses incurred from housing and legal processes make life without parole a more economical alternative. Perhaps the greatest issue when examining the pros and cons associated with the death penalty is the possibility of an innocent person being executed. We can look to DNA to continue to exonerate the falsely accused, but relying on it solely is not an option.
