Being a father is committing to an endless devotion to another human being and being a role model for them through thick and thin. Fatherhood is dimensionless. The perspective in which a person views the act of being a father represents how they would define it. Fatherhood can be distinguished by three different divisions: the excitement that comes during the pregnancy, the knowledge they gain as they progress through fatherhood, and the acceptance of seeing what the child amounts to as they welcome adulthood themselves. The word itself holds so much power, as the title of 'father ' is earned not given. There is a quote by Gabrielle Zevin about fatherhood that shows that it is a boundary defying word: “His heart is too full, and no words to release it” (Zevin 46). Quite honestly, there are no words to sum up being a father. A father is someone that a child is supposed to look up to. Even the thought of being a role model for someone else can put anyone into a trance of excitement. During pregnancy, a woman’s partner will usually be elated even as she is going through the hardships of being pregnant. Because they know that someone will soon be there that will be a part of their lives forever, soon-to-be fathers are normally intoxicated with emotions. Having a first child is a very proud moment for men, it’s not only a test of strength and courage, but also a viewpoint into how much they can love and care for someone other than themselves. Only summing up a father as a ‘role model’ is inadequate to say the least. The internet’s definition of a father could limit them to being a teacher of life. However, children are just as much the teacher as their parents. Through fatherhood men consider themselves the leader and figure that thei... ... middle of paper ... ...hey set for them. Fatherhood to a man’s children is whatever they strive to be and something clearly distinguishable from a few words in the dictionary. Throughout the stages of fatherhood: excitement, knowledge, and acceptance; a man learns what it truly means to be responsible for another, to be a role-model, to be completely devoted to a human being. Fatherhood is not a word simply defined, it is a word full of hope, happiness, sadness, and longing to see your child succeed. The word fatherhood takes on new and more complex meanings for every person who uses it, the feelings fatherhood brings are never the same. Fatherhood is a loaded and symbolic word, holding heavy meaning because the title is earned and not simply given. To be a father is often the most important job a man will hold, giving the word fatherhood incredible importance and deeply personal meaning.
