Why do always assume what someone is from when we first hear about them? A lot of us end up assuming what someone looks like as well as what they might be like. We always do this and it just isn't right to do that. We do the exact same with Death. Though not everyone will do this, there are some who will. Death is not all that his name says, but were blind to see past that.
Thesis: Death is a not that bad of guy as the story tells is side of the story. Death does many things when taking the dead to the afterlife. Death is a kind and caring person who actually seems to be forced into doing this.

Though he seems to show most of it towards Liesel. Death has a moment of thought in “The Flag” Chapter for Liesel or as we know at that point “The Book Thief”. “I wanted to stop. To crouch down. I wanted to say “I’m sorry, child.” But that is not allowed.” Death shows empathy for Liesel as she seems to be in a very depressed state. We find out that this ends up being a foreshadowing of the end of the story. People who show empathy for someone generally are people who care about many other. Thing is Death is not allowed to interact with the people who are currently living. Though we may not know why Death is not allowed to interact with the humans who are living. We do know that Death is not the heartless, gross, terrifying, grotesque, being we all see him as. He has empathy for poor Liesel (Spoilers) that had lost everyone she loved at the hand of an explosion. Very few people managed to survive the explosion. Liesel being one of the lucky few had no one to come to her as she was one of the only survivors around. Death saw it all. The death of the many Liesel had loved. Later on Liesel was to be adopted by the Mayor’s wife and have her third family. Remember this was taking place during World War II where Hitler was seen as a threat. He may be Death but he seems to be forced into this. Death is not that fond of wars as he says “They say that war is Death’s best friend, but I must offer you a different point of on that one. To me, war is like the new boss who expects impossible. He stands over your shoulder repeating one thing, incessantly: “Get it done, get it done”. So you work harder. You get the job done. The boss, however, does not thank you. He asks for more.”(309) As you see Death sees it as the most annoying job ever in history. He talks about it as if he works for a company that is unruly and quite exhausting. It seems the job that we have bestowed upon is just getting him tired. Death never gets a break from this. Death shows empathy with no one showing it back towards him. Empathy is always needed. Yet we seem to not give it to Death. At the very end of the story he says something that proves it. “***A LAST NOTE FROM YOUR NARRATOR***I am haunted by humans” This is quite true as he takes the souls of the humans. Not only that the amount of deaths on average per day is 151,600. The death rate back then must`ve been heavily raised possibly putting it higher than this number.
