Why do always assume what someone is from when we first hear about them? A lot of us end up assuming what someone looks like as well as what they might be like. We always do this and it just isn't right to do that. We do the exact same with Death. Though not everyone will do this, there are some who will. Death is not all that his name says, but were blind to see past that.
Thesis: Death is a not that bad of guy as the story tells is side of the story. Death does many things when taking the dead to the afterlife. Death is a kind and caring person who actually seems to be forced into doing this.

Though he seems to show most of it towards Liesel. Death has a moment of thought in “The Flag” Chapter for Liesel or as we know at that point “The Book Thief”. “I wanted to stop. To crouch down. I wanted to say “I’m sorry, child.” But that is not allowed.” Death shows empathy for Liesel as she seems to be in a very depressed state. We find out that this ends up being a foreshadowing of the end of the story. People who show empathy for someone generally are people who care about many other. Thing is Death is not allowed to interact with the people who are currently living. Though we may not know why Death is not allowed to interact with the humans who are living. We do know that Death is not the heartless, gross, terrifying, grotesque, being we all see him as. He has empathy for poor Liesel (Spoilers) that had lost everyone she loved at the hand of an explosion. Very few people managed to survive the explosion. Liesel being one of the lucky few had no one to come to her as she was one of the only survivors around. Death saw it all. The death of the many Liesel had loved. Later on Liesel was to be adopted by the Mayor’s wife and have her third family. Remember this was taking place during World War II where Hitler was seen as a threat. He may be Death but he seems to be forced into this. Death is not that fond of wars as he says “They say that war is Death’s best friend, but I must offer you a different point of on that one. To me, war is like the new boss who expects impossible. He stands over your shoulder repeating one thing, incessantly: “Get it done, get it done”. So you work harder. You get the job done. The boss, however, does not thank you. He asks for more.”(309) As you see Death sees it as the most annoying job ever in history. He talks about it as if he works for a company that is unruly and quite exhausting. It seems the job that we have bestowed upon is just getting him tired. Death never gets a break from this. At the very end of the story he says something that proves it. “***A LAST NOTE FROM YOUR NARRATOR***I am haunted by humans” This is quite true as he takes the souls of the humans. Death can be harsh. Death can be punishing. Death can be for the most, sad. As most people see death, it brings tough and hard emotions to their minds. Most don’t understand that death should be celebrated. They believe that once they die they never see them again. This idea that death is the end, has haunted the human life for all of eternity. Death brings cold thoughts to a person, which makes them miserable. The passing away of a beloved person, can be extremely dangerous through the different ideas and attitudes that come with death. Death is something that causes fear in many peoples lives. People will typically try to avoid the conversation of death at all cost. The word itself tends to freak people out. The thought of death is far beyond any living person’s grasp. When people that are living think about the concept of death, their minds go to many different places. Death is inevitable. As mortal souls, we know that we will be condemned to death. Although, we will never know when it approaches. Death is devious, agonizing, fearful, and inescapable, it is the very thing that can send chills down our spine that makes us cringe. Many of us fear death, because of the things we hear of it or the mental images associated with someone on their death bed suffering in pain. But someone of us has acknowledged that there is no escaping it, and we go into the game knowing what to expect. Over the course of the semester, we’ve read different literary works, in them, we were confronted with characters who had to deal with death, some of whom took their own lives, some who faced their death without fear, and some who have wished for death but did not die. These characters include; Antigone and Haimon, in the play Antigone by Sophocles, Socrates in the Apology by Plato, and Julius Caesar and Brutus in the play Julius Caesar by Shakespeare.
