Death and Dying Death and dying is a very uncomfortable topic for most people who have grown up in the United States. It is something that often goes undiscussed and when it does come up, the discussion tends to be short. It is spoken about in hushed tones and tragic gestures. Most of the time, the topic of death is approached when discussing a recent tragic event, like a school shooting or terrorist attack. It becomes, “Did you hear about what happened over in Paris???” Everyone expresses their horror and gets the shivers, while fervently hoping it doesn’t happen to them next. Christians believe in a heaven and a hell. We believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins, so we can go to heaven if we believe in him and the forgiveness of sins. We believe that people should maintain a good soul condition and be prepared for death at any moment. We trust that God will be with us at death and strengthen our faith, so we can remain strong until he takes us to heaven. It is important that we be prepared so we do not enter eternity in an unbelieving condition because the soul condition we die in is the one we spend eternity in. Time of dying is seen as a blessed time, when we see loved ones enter in to heaven and enter eternal rest. It is also a time when family comes together to provide love and support. Other cultures view on death is based largely on tradition. Jewish, for example, have many different traditions. They have a specific ritual they must do after death. They must use wooden coffins, not metal coffins and have closed casket funerals only. Also, loved ones provide a 24-hour vigil so the deceased is not alone. And funerals are conducted as quickly as possible after death (Berk, 2014, p. 664). Some cultures believe it is important to maintain composure and work as hard as they can to maintain composure throughout the whole ordeal of death and funeral.
