David Walker was born a free black man in Wilmington, North Carolina, September 28th, 1785. His mother was a free black woman, and his father was a slave. Walkers father passed away a few months before he was born. In his Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World, in reference to the cruelty of slavery he observed, Walker stated, “If I remain in this bloody land, I will not live long. As true as g-d reigns, I will be avenged for the sorrow, which my people have suffered. This is not the place for me- no, no. I must leave this part of the country. It will be a great trial for me to live on the same soil where so many men are in slavery; certainly I cannot remain where I must hear their chains continually, and where I must encounter the insults …show more content…
David Walker describes the fact that slaves are humans just as much as their White American masters are. He states the pressing matter is that “You [colored people] have to prove to the Americans and the world, that we are MEN and not brutes, as we have been represented and by millions treated.” (Page 33) He asks the question “How can those enemies but say that we and our children are not of the HUMAN FAMILY, but were made by our Creator to be an inheritance?” Although nowadays many people agree that black people have the same anatomy as whites do, but back then many people did not view blacks as equals to themselves. Article IV is repetitive information from Article II with minor specificity in describing slaves as being American Men and not just men. David Walker states, “This country is as much ours as it is the whites, whether they will admit it now or not, they will see and believe it by and by.” (Page 55) and “This land which we have watered with our tears and our blood, is now our mother country, and we are well satisfied to stay where wisdom abounds and the gospel is free.” (Page 57) This is contradicting however because not all slaves were born on American soil. Most slaves were imported from Africa against their will and sold at Slave Auctions. David Walker reasons that White Americans do not look at colored as equals. He argues that White Americans think that they better than those that are colored. Some opinions of White Americans he uses are that those who are colored are incapable of self- government, and that those who are colored are satisfied to rest in slavery to their masters and their master’s children. In David Walker’s Appeal, David Walker is completely fed up with the treatment of Black men and women in America at the hands of White people. He is tired of the constant dehumanization, brutality, and utter lack of acknowledgment of all of the contributions Black people made to the building of this country. Walker was extremely skillful in his delivery of his Appeal. He used concrete history and the fact that he had “travelled over a considerable portion of these United States, and having, in the course of my travels, taken the most accurate observations of things as they exist” (Walker) to build his credibility. He used the very things that White Americans held so dear to their hearts to point out the sheer hypocrisy in their actions and way of thinking, mainly the Bible and their political documents.

David Walker was a black man that aimed to inspire American blacks to achieve the freedom they deserve. He grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina and his early childhood biography has little detail. His dad was a slave and his mother was free. His date of birth was estimated to be around 1797. In North Carolina, the blacks greatly outnumbered the whites. Although there were more blacks, they only had a small amount of them that were free. Walker’s childhood definitely had a great impact on his mindsight to feel the need to speak up for the blacks. Wilmington taught him a lot about how slaves were treated poorly and the history of their suffering. Also, there were certain things happening in Charleston that led him to the rebellion. Charleston happened to be the center for free blacks that had major goals. These ambitious blacks started many foundations as a group such as the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The severity of slavery evolved and developed rapidly after its introduction to America. Jupiter Hammon was a free man of color who wrote his essay, An Address to the Negroes in the State of New York, in 1787. At this time, the Constitution had just been signed and Hammon wrote based on a peaceful mindset related to the writing of the Constitution. David Walker, however, wrote his essay, Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World, in 1831. At this time, slavery was just beginning to expand across the nation and Walker wrote his article with this new inspiration in mind. These two articles are extremely different because they are representative of the time periods from which they came. Hammon’s tone was meant to be pacifying for the slaves and it was effective in promoting a sense of peace in America.
After the Civil War, African Americans encountered great discrimination and suffering. During this era, two influential leaders emerged from different philosophical camps. Brooker T. Washignton of Virginia and William Edward Burghardt Dubois of Massachusetts proposed, different means to improve African Americans’ conditions. These men had a common goal to enrich the black community. However, the methods they advocated to reach these goals significantly differed.
One theme found lingering in Walker's appeals is religion. It's obvious Walker's route to literacy was through the Bible. The appeals are immersed with citations form the Old and New Testaments. Much of his argument also deals with God in examining the actions of The Christians (Whites). Article III., Our Wretchedness in Consequence of the Preachers of the Religion of Jesus Christ, delves into the actions of the whites and how it contradicts with their so-called beliefs. He wonders how slave owners can murder blacks on Saturday and go to church on Sunday like nothing happened.
Martin Luther King Jr’s Dream has said to have been fulfilled. However, others claim that the dream has only been taken at face value, thus, misunderstood. In John McWhorter’s article, “Black People Should Stop Expecting White America to ‘Wake Up’ to Racism,” he refers to past and recent events to establish the difference between society’s fantasy and the misinterpreted Dream of Dr. King.

It is impossible for anyone to survive a horrible event in their life without a relationship to have to keep them alive. The connection and emotional bond between the person suffering and the other is sometimes all they need to survive. On the other hand, not having anyone to believe in can make death appear easier than life allowing the person to give up instead of fighting for survival. In The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, Aminata Diallo survives her course through slavery by remembering her family and the friends that she makes. Aminata is taught by her mother, Sira to deliver babies in the villages of her homeland. This skill proves to be very valuable to Aminata as it helps her deliver her friends babies and create a source of income. Aminata’s father taught Aminata to write small words in the dirt when she was small. Throughout the rest of the novel, Aminata carries this love for learning new things to the places that she travels and it inspires her to accept the opportunities given to her to learn how to write, read maps, and perform accounting duties. Early in the novel Aminata meets Chekura and they establish a strong relationship. Eventually they get married but they are separated numerous times after. Aminata continuously remembers and holds onto her times with Chekura amidst all of her troubles. CHILDREN. The only reason why Aminata Diallo does not die during her journey into and out of slavery is because she believes strongly in her parents, husband and children; therefore proving that people survive hardships only when they have relationships in which to believe.
Winthrop is not considered a founding father because he only founded the Massachusetts Bay colony in New England. “Winthrop was chosen governor in October 1629; for the next twenty years most of the responsibility for the colony rested in his hands”. He shouldn’t be considered a founding father because he merely raised a colony, while others fought for the birth of America and its independence from England. In his sermons, “A Model of Christian Charity”, he preaches the message to “love thy neighbor” and the expectations to bear the burden and grace of making a “covenant with God”. Winthrop is not considered a founding father because his works deal with the recurring theme of “love is the bond of perfection”. He is not fueled by revolutionary spirit, but he simply desires to change the church.

Hurston uses a wide variety of imagery, diction using figurative language freely with metaphors. Her tone is bordering controversial using local lingo. Hurston begins the essay in her birth town: Eatonville, Florida; an exclusively Negro town where whites were a rarity, only occasionally passing by as a tourist.

As found in Article 4, Walker states that he used “language so very simple, that the most ignorant, who can read at all, may easily understand” (74). For that reason Walker’s projected audience were black citizens who suffered from slavery. I strongly believe that Walker planned that this document would be read by whites so that they may perhaps regret and change their ways. Walker also stated towards the whites that “my object is to see justice done at home, before we go to convert the heathens” (20). As a result, Walker’s Appeal was both an inspirational document and a frightening one do to the fact it challenged the white’s ideas that blacks were lazy, and unintelligent. This document also sought after to inspire Black African Americans to discover self worth along with pride in their inheritance.
Analysis of Mis-Education of the Negro The most important aspect for a teacher to understand is that every student that comes through their door has their own experiences, history, and point of view. Mis-Education of the Negro is about how the euro-centrism-based learning has, in one way or another, crippled the African-American community and their pursuit for an equal opportunity in our society. Written by Carter Godwin Woodson in 1933, this African-American studies book is written so that everyone can understand what society has done and what they can do to correct their wrongs. Author Carter Godwin Woodson dedicated his life to studying African-American history and fought so it can be taught in schools and studied by scholars.
