Rape defined is forcing sexual intercourse upon someone without his or her consent. This isn’t just a girls’ problem, boys have to deal with this too. According to the American Psychological Association, nearly one in ten girls and one in twenty boys say they have been raped or experienced some form of sexual assault (Atlanta Journal, 1). Almost more than half of rape victims know their attacker; they don’t report it or tell anybody. In most date rape cases, the attacker and victim have known each other for at least a year or even longer. Only about 10 percent of rapes are reported, less than that go to court. According to data taken by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, one forcible rape is reported to the police every six minutes, on average (Funk0 and Wagnall’s, 1). Date rapists do have a difference between stranger rapists, which is a rape that involves a stranger, it’s that date rapists don’t really use threats or weapons; they use more psychological pressure or become physical. Another difference is that date rapes take place on weekends late at night, or at the male’s house. Stranger rapists go after someone anytime, which mostly happens at their victim’s own house. One of the similarities between date rapists and stranger rapists is that they both have different forms of attack, such as a surprise attack who expects to have sex as some kind of payment. According to a study at Kent State University, men who forced sex were found to be more likely to see a certain amount of aggression as normal in sexual relationships. They’re also less inclined to believe that women really mean it when they say “no” (Date Rape, 5).
