Danticat's The Farming of Bones and George Orwell's Animal Farm

In 1492, Christopher Columbus founded an island in the western Atlantic Ocean and he named it Hispaniola. Hispaniola was inhabited by the Arawaks, and they were the ones responsible for later giving Haiti its name. Haiti soon became one of France’s most prosperous colonies in the America’s, and it also became one of the world’s leading chief coffee and sugar producers. Around the 18th century settlement began to expand here, and Haiti was settled by Creoles, slaves, Frenchmen, and freed blacks. Around this time, the Haitian society was undergoing some tough times and a debate over power had begun. The concern with governmental authority was a major problem, and within a short period of time, a revolt for independence had broken out, and destroyed the entire society. As time continued to pass, the revolt continued, but in 1804 Haiti was able to gain complete independence (Infoplease.com).

The society of Haiti today is in very poor and horrific conditions. The country of Haiti is still undergoing many governmental issues, and a lot of violence is still occurring due to the difference of opinions in regards to the president and other forms of leadership. To add to the chaos, this country is filled with many more economic problems such health issues, employment and unemployment issues, and the biggest issues deal with natural disasters. Within the past two years, Haiti and its bordering countries have experienced four natural disasters, all of which have claimed the lives of thousands of people. For Haiti the most disastrous event was the earthquake that hit in January of 2010. ... these two books that have such a huge impact on the world today. Even though both of these authors were from two different countries and wrote about two different time frames, they both had a huge impact on the world, and are considered to be very successful.
