OMG: Communicating in the Twenty-First Century
Text messaging is the trendiest way to communicate in the twenty-first century. However, texting while driving is now the leading cause of death among teenagers – surpassing drinking and driving, according to a study by Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Alarming statistics from the report state that more than 3,000 teens die each year in crashes caused by texting while driving, and more than 50 percent of teens admit to texting while driving (Texting, 2013). As a result of texting, cell phones have created communication barriers, which has enabled people to relinquish quality written correspondences, face-to-face conversations and voice-to-voice phone calls. Cell phones cause distractions for students while they are in school because students have become nearly inseparable with their devices. Creating a cell phone application that would provide guidelines to establish when appropriate texting capabilities should be available would not only help with safety, manners and distractions but also guide people to have healthier, more meaningful relationships.
Cell phone users have to possess a desire for self discipline and take the initiative to download the new phone application. This application will disable the capability to text and will silence the phone when the person brings his or her phone into a designated area, such as a school, movie theater, restaurant, car, or meeting. Cell phone users will have to provide addresses and words they would like the device to acknowledge. For example, the address of the person’s school or place of employment will be entered into the application which will then deactivate the capabilities when the phone is located at the given address. ... Most of the students’ texts during the school day are exchanged with parents. Although parents want to be connected to their children, it is adding to the growing list of classroom distractions (Graham, 2011).
Creating a phone application that will guide cell phone users to establish when appropriate texting capabilities could be disabled, will not only assist with communication barriers but also manners. If we do not do something about the effects, text messaging has on distractions in the educational process, driving, and human interaction with people humans will not know how to enjoy a successful, meaningful relationship, obtain skills needed to hold a successful career, and learn how to productively and empathetically speak to others. It is not about giving up our phones, but about using them with an intention that is fun, safe, and effective.
