The Dangers of Cosmetic Surgery

Society has indoctrinated men and women to believe that in order to be considered “beautiful” you must look like the images on television, billboards, and magazines. C. Credibility: Since one of my friends has undergone cosmetic surgery, and I have heard numerous of stories about cosmetic surgery I feel prepared to speak about the issue. D. Propositional Statement: Cosmetic Surgery remains a problem in society because it carries a degree of risk such as psychological illness and severe side effects. I propose that people should take a more naturalistic approach and not consider cosmetic surgery. II. Body A. The first part of the problem is that people who undergo cosmetic surgeries are at higher risk for suffering with psychological issues. 1. “Cosmetic surgery doesn’t solve all problems” says Associate Professor Ingela Kvalem (Ladegaard, 2012). A greater number of patients who have undergone cosmetic surgery suffer with psychological illnesses compared to people who have not. People who get cosmetic surgeries are more likely to experience deep depression that can lead to body dysmorphic disorder and even suicide. Body dysmorphic disorder is an illness in which you become obsessed about the flaws in your appearance and are constantly trying to change them ("Diseases and conditions," 2014). For example, breast augmentation is ranked as the world’s most popular cosmetic procedure. In 2012, over 300,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed ("Cosmetic procedures increase," 2012). According to Reuters Edition, women with breast implants are three times more likely to commit suicide than others (Fox, 2007). 2.
