Company Profile

In 1995, services like the Web, open database, interactive and broadcast multimedia, shared modem solution and shared email management design were still comparatively new to the telecom industry. This is when three college graduates established Cyberway Computer Communications Co. Ltd. in Shanghai with an initial investment of RMB 500, 000. The company was primarily an ICP (internet content provider) engaged in web design, online promotion design, WWW (world wide web) domain name application and site maintenance business. In the mid-1990s, a large number of Chinese enterprises were looking for opportunities to promote their businesses online. Cyberway then cooperated with Shanghai Telecom, an IAP (internet access provider), to provide a full range of services to Internet subscribers. In 1996, Cyberway became a Microsoft-certified solution provider, offering a full package of Microsoft Intranet solutions based on Windows NT. The company thus switched its focus to Internet application development. By 1998, Cyberway had become a systems integrator and solution provider for Internet applications.

Industry Overview

China has had plans for rapid expansion of its information infrastructure. They have developed a nationwide high-capacity telecommunications network based on optical, microwave and satellite transmission technologies. At the time, more than 2,000 Chinese cities and counties have access to networks for data telecom and packet exchanges, which are connected to 40 data Webs abroad. The entire telecom system of China has been digitized and equipped with program-control technology and value-added services such as high-speed data telecom and picture transmission are available on the network.

The majority of Internet users are from the business and academic communities. According to what was formerly the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications’ report in early 1998, China’s Internet usage has grown from 2,000 users in 1993 to 620,000 users at the end of 1997. The report predicts that there will be more than 7 million users by the end of the year 2001. Chinese Internet users are mainly interested in technology-related information, followed by community news, business, and financial information. Of these Internet users, 78% use the www, 11% use email and 8% use file transfer protocol (FTP). In early 1998, China had more than 5,000 “.cn” registered domain names and over 2,000 websites.

While China’s Internet infrastructure is reasonably well established, Internet application development is still in an early stage.
