In today’s society we live in a world filled with different types of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. These are the three main types of social media currently. It has become a main part of our everyday lives. As soon as many wake up, the first thing they do is check their phones. They are either looking at messages or checking a social network. It seems as if many cannot live without having to check their personal social accounts daily or even multiple times a day. Although social networking is very entertaining, I believe it can also have many negative effects. The internet and many other electronic devices are taking over and causing many consequences. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that takes place online and on any form of electronic technology. People feel like if they are behind a screen the rude comments do not harm others. Cyberbullying occurs in all age groups from students to older adults. Dr. Gary Giumetti, a psychology professor, learned that “in a 2012 study he contributed to, 21 of the 100 college student participants from the southeastern United States had experienced cyberbullying” (“Cyberbullying…”). Not only does it affect those in high school, but it also affects those who have gone on to higher education. Cyberbullying can be done by name calling, threatening, and black mail. Those who contribute in the act of cyberbullying only feel bad about themselves and are trying to make themselves feel better. Cyberbullying can cause a lot of mental and physical harm on a person. It causes mental harm by causing the victim to have a low self-esteem about his or her self. It can also cause the victim to physically harm his or her self because of the buildup of being put down by someone on another side of a screen. Cyberbullying may not be getting put down in person or getting pushed around at school, but it does just as much effect as bullying in
