In today’s society we live in a world filled with different types of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. These are the three main types of social media currently. It has become a main part of our everyday lives. As soon as many wake up, the first thing they do is check their phones. They are either looking at messages or checking a social network. It seems as if many cannot live without having to check their personal social accounts daily or even multiple times a day. Although social networking is very entertaining, I believe it can also have many negative effects. The internet and many other electronic devices are taking over and causing many consequences. In my opinion social media has developed many negative effects such …show more content…
Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that takes place online and on any form of electronic technology. People feel like if they are behind a screen the rude comments do not harm others. Cyberbullying occurs in all age groups from students to older adults. Dr. Gary Giumetti, a psychology professor, learned that “in a 2012 study he contributed to, 21 of the 100 college student participants from the southeastern United States had experienced cyberbullying” (“Cyberbullying…”). Not only does it affect those in high school, but it also affects those who have gone on to higher education. Cyberbullying can be done by name calling, threatening, and black mail. Those who contribute in the act of cyberbullying only feel bad about themselves and are trying to make themselves feel better. Cyberbullying can cause a lot of mental and physical harm on a person. It causes mental harm by causing the victim to have a low self-esteem about his or her self. It can also cause the victim to physically harm his or her self because of the buildup of being put down by someone on another side of a screen. Cyberbullying may not be getting put down in person or getting pushed around at school, but it does just as much effect as bullying in
Cyberbullying is a very controversial matter. People are starting to say that cyberbullies should be prosecuted for their actions. First of all, there are more important crimes to focus on like murder and theft than just prosecuting a kid who said something “offensive” to another kid. Also, the First Amendment protects cyberbullies to have freedom of speech and say stuff to other kids. To add on, just because someone “excludes” another kid form not joining a group, does not mean that they should be criminally prosecuted. If people are being cyberbullied, they should not use social media much.
With the use of the internet increasing, researchers are finding a higher amount of cyberbullying. According to Hinduja and Patchin, “There is no shortage of potential offenders or victims of cyberbullying because of the widespread availability of computers and the Internet in the developed world,” (Hinduja and Patchin, 132). Both the writers make a good point stating this fact. With the amount of technology that is available to students, on different devises, has allowed them to freely communicate. While this is not all bad, there are major downfalls, cyber bullying being a big one.
Most importantly, I think that social media has a negative effect on people. It is more dangerous to people being on social media. As an example, Agata Blaszczak-Boxe article “Social Media Use in Teens Linked to Poor Sleep, Anxiety”, states that “pressure to be available 24/7 on social media may lead poorer sleep quality as well risk of depression and anxiety, according to a new study”. Also examined teens’ sleep quality, self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. The whole time spending on social media the examiner showed decreased sleep quality, lower self-esteem, increased anxiety, and depression levels. It shows that social media can also affect the health. Social media can be a serious danger to people’s well-being that can cause problems to them.
Effects of cyberbullying cannot be underestimated. Long-term effects showed that those who are bullied also became bullies in the future. Similar to bullying in person, immediate effects of cyberbullying are that the youths who are subjected to cyberbullying tend to separate themselves from the society and live alone. They develop inferiority and doubt on their skills and abilities. Having the high possibility to be depressed, the worst solution is to cut their own lives for they can see that it is the only way to answer their problem. Megan Meier, a 13-year old girl committed suicide after she got bullied. Former friend’s mother and an 18-year old accomplice pretend to be Josh. Josh was the identity sending messages to Megan and had a fake
It has been forty three years since the first email was delivered; since then, our ways of communication have changed. We are now living in a society in which almost everybody is provided with a piece of communicating technology to keep in touch with each other. Social networking service, a platform for people who want to share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections over the Internet, has deeply affected our life in many ways. The debate as to whether the influences are positive or negative has been a controversial issue since 72 percent of all internet users are now active on social media (22 Social Media Facts and Statistics You Should Know in 2014). So, how does social media affect our lives? Speaking for myself, I think social networking is slowly damaging our everyday life by crawling into our personal life, turning into a deadly weapon, and becoming a dangerous addiction and distraction.
Context: Cyberbullying is a relatively new strain of bullying. With the Internet being at such easy reach and children and teenagers being so tech savvy, things such as a mean text or an unfriendly social media post is just a finger click away. “Cyberbullying is in simple terms, known as, bullying through the Internet. Whether it is through email, instant messaging, on a Web site through images sent digitally. Because cyberbullying is so new, it has caught the eyes of the press and educators recently. Cyberbullying has both similarities and differences of traditional bullying. There are also unique repercussions and ways of dealing with it. (Kowalski, Limber, and Agatston pg. 1-2).
“Cyberbullying is reported as an aggressive, intentional act distributed by an individual group, using contact in an electronic medium, continuously and relentlessly against someone who cannot stand up for himself or herself easily (Smith et al., 2008).” In 2009 cyberbullying was found as a disproportion
Schools are having to frequently update their codes of conduct to deal with cyberbullying circumstances that have led to lawsuits. A school can be held liable in court for something that has happened to a student due to constant cyber bullying if the issue is not resolved through some type of discipline. Schools could be sued for ignoring signs of constant cyber harassment towards a student who eventually commits suicide because of the incessant attacks. It is necessary for a school 's code of conduct to embed new methods on how to deal with cyberbullying situations for current and future measures. School districts did not interfere with conflicts happening amongst students off campus until parents began to blame schools when the school did not take action to deal with the problems their children faced. To parents it seemed as if schools were allowing students to become prone to attack when disciplinary action was not taken to handle cyber
The topic I chose to write about for the key assessment is bullying. Bullying can be described as a type of repeated aggressive behavior among school aged children where a student causes physical, emotional, or social power imbalance to another. Traditionally, bullying was done on school grounds and was easier for teachers and school administrators to prevent. However, with the rapid growth in student use of technology, bullies have used electronic platforms to send harmful messages to recipients. While physical bullying and violence towards other students should never be acceptable, the lasting emotional effect on students is also something to consider. This topic deals with the sociological approach to teaching that was covered
Abstract With the new society and technology, there are many disadvantages. One that happens to be very important is cyberbullying. Many bullies prefer to cyberbully because they can do it from the safety of their home and/or behind a computer screen. This is inhumane and wrong because to be bullied is to be stripped of your rights, and rather than in public, where someone can try and help, they do it from their homes. When someone is in crisis mode, they may not know how to deal with it.
For those who believes adolescents should not be punished for committing online harassment need definitely need to think twice. Allowing teens to post rude post sending nasty messages and images to attack other innocent kids should be unacceptable. 50 percent of teens have been bullied online before because young teens now spend a tremendous amount time social media .It consider the main interest, for children and teenager other than sleeping. Authorities and society should makes more efforts to legislate against adolescent who get involved in cyberbullying. In addition to prevent cyberbullying parents, and schools should retrench children 's technology use since it is consider the common source that causes cyberbullying.
What is Cyber bullying? Cyber bullying is just like regular bullying but instead of bullying face to face, it’s done on the internet. In America, cyber bullying has gotten out of hand during the past year. Unfortunately kids who are bullied through the internet have a difficult time getting away from the bullying. Children today walk the street while thinking or knowing they will get picked on. This has also caused teens to commit suicide. Usually teens that are the bullies have a lower self-esteem than the person they’re bulling. Teens today use the internet more than anything excluding sleep. In two thousand and eight young teens ages 12-17 had access to the internet. Cyber bullying needs to stop before more of our children hurt themselves. Studies show that most likely a female would be the most bullied. A high percent of teens have been angry, frustrated, sad, embarrassed, scared and shockingly a small percent weren't even bothered.
Social media has nothing but negative effects on people’s minds. Social networking can become very addicting and people can get wrapped up in the drama and excitement of the cyber world. It would only improve our society today if social media never existed to our knowledge. Our society today feels so connected with social media that it interferes with our lives making every task even harder with the temptations.
Because cyberbullying is a relatively new phenomenon, there is some degree of variance in its definition. In its early inception, cyberbullying was thought to be limited to the internet. However, the rapid creation of new technology tolls has expanded the boundaries to include cell phones, instant messaging, chat rooms, and email (Campfield, 2006). Campfield (2006) conducted a study of middle school students to determine the incidence rates of cyberbullying. She found that nearly 70% of students were involved in cyberbullying in some capacity, as a bully or victim. In a similar study, Li (2007) found that 39% of students have been involved in cyberbullying, while 52% were aware of a peer being harassed through electronic m...
Cyberbullying is a type of bullying that takes place with the use of any electronic technology. Cyberbullying is a major problem affecting young people today. There are different types of cyberbullying. This topic comes as an interest to many people these days because bullying is very common and it can ruin a person’s life. These days, cyberbullying is considered a new form of bullying. It can happen over the internet by computer, mobile phone or any other electronic devices. Cyberbullying could involve any form of unpleasant words or pictures being displayed on the internet for others to see. It could also involve the spreading of lies about the victim on the internet. Many people are stepping up efforts to prevent bullying in the first place. Approximately half of U.S. students are impacted by traditional bullying each school day (Ross). Bullying peaks in middle school, then reduces in high school. Other types of bullying may involve the passing of notes behind someone’s back, rumors being whispered about someone, or being threatened in the internet. The most common types of cyberbullying include passing of humiliating photos, cell phone pranks, cyber stalking, impersonation, online slam books, and text wars. Bullies appear scary but truthfully they are the unhappy ones. Majority of bullies have been bullied by parents, siblings, or other young people. This may trigger them to bully and pick on other kids.
