The saying, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” does not reflect the truth in the halls of school or in the world of social media. Words spoken by children or teens intending to bully does cause pain and emotional damage to the victims of bullying. An epidemic of bullying is occurring among children and teenagers every day on social media and in schools across America. Children or teenagers who do not have a good home life or perceive they are better than others tend to bully other children or teenagers. A person considered a bully chooses to target another person that is smaller and weaker than him or her. Also, there are children or teenagers who choose a form of bullying called cyber bullying. A common form of bullying for this generation of children and teens is cyber bullying which is due to the explosion of technology. Cyber bullying occurs in the different social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. The majority of bullies in this generation of children and teenagers chooses to take out his or her anger by attacking a specific person on a social media website. Since social media has become the main form of contact between people, bullies use it to make fake accounts. The bully uses the fake social media account to attack a person without being identified as the perpetrator. The bully uses tactics such as name calling, slander, and harassment to inflict social and emotional distress upon his or her victim. The person who is bullied often does not know how to handle the situation, which results in depression. The result of the depression for the victim is a decline in school attendance. The victim is usually reluctant in telling his or her parent, school administration, or guidance counselor. He or she feels the bullying will escalate or increase if they tell an adult about the situation. As a result, the victim of bullying becomes depressed because he or she feels helpless and hopeless to help themselves. The victim does not know what to do with the emotions and fears going on inside his or her mind which causes depression. The ability for the victim to cope with bullying becomes impossible which often leads to suicidal
