Section I: Introduction
There are many fields that a dual Econ and Business student can be a part of; jobs range from working at pharmaceutical companies to working for the government. Within the Business/Econ major there are a plethora of discourse communities that have different roles, from investment bankers to Hedge Fund managers. By choosing the genre resumes, I was able to take several topics across the board and relate them to my major in general. This allowed for observation of a discourse community through a genre analysis throughout the Business field. Simply, I seek to explain how a resume used in genre analysis can give a general overview of my profession. I will go in depth into the resume genre and provide an example of a resume.
Through analysis of the discourse community by Borg and Harris it is possible to determine several definitions of genre. After considering these, I established the definition of genre as a theme for the classification of our profession. Through looking at both authors we can see a comprehensive definition of a discourse community.

Genres highlight the key points within the discourse community and analyzing them can lead us to understand many points. As we take a closer view of this genre we really see that the purpose is for the author to get a professional job. They allow applicants to see the uniqueness of the author as an individual. It takes a picture that captures ones interest and experience. Even though resumes can be broad they are very important in in professional world. Having a resume is ideally up to your own preferences and allow for much creativity. Through a resume we can display a multitude of ideals including rhetorical appeals, content, structure, style, and design help achieve the purpose of this genre, plus the rhetorical state.
A discourse community has an agreed set of common public goals. It is a group of individuals that have a specific way of interacting and communicating with one another. It is also used as a means to maintain and extend a group’s knowledge, as well as initiate new members into the group. Specific kinds of languages are used as a form of social behavior. Such discourse communities vary in size, purpose and importance.
Discourse Communities are defined as “a group of individuals bound by a common goal who communicate through approved channels and whose discourse is regulated” (Couzelis et al. 12). Every person on this planet belongs to a discourse community whether they realize it or not. If you start at a larger scale, Texas A&M University-Commerce is a large discourse community, and within that larger discourse community there are hundreds, quite possibly thousands of smaller discourse communities. Many of the discourse communities overlap with members belonging to several communities at the same time.
According to Swale’s (1990), a discourse community is a group of people who communicate with each other and share a common goal to which they will help one another achieve using specific mechanisms and lexis (p. 217). The six characteristics used in the identification process are as
A basketball team is a great example of a discourse community. In a discourse community you have a few characteristics such as the goals, lexis and genre of the team. Goals are the team’s main focus/points that they want to achieve. Genre is basically how the members of the team stay connected and in contact with each other. Lexis can be described as the language and terminology used between the team members.

Football is a discourse community I am involved in where the members have similar goals and expectations. As in, what Swales describes a discourse community as groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals”. In his article “The Concept of Discourse Community” (Swales 466-479) Swales argues for a fresh conceptualization of discourse community, especially as a distinct entity from the similar sociolinguistic concept of speech community, and building upon the foundations of that argument defines discourse community in his own. In the Conceptualization of Discourse Community he talks about the six defining characteristics of a discourse community. The discourse community I am part of is playing and coaching football.
In English 1102, I was exposed to a variety of different genres, including, argumentative research paper, an annotated bibliography, an analytical paper, and a workplace specific piece. Entering this class the majority of papers I had written were all analytical, and in this class we went above and beyond the basic 5 paragraph essay. Though each paper had a different genre and style, I learned that each project was similar in composition.
My discourse community is Christianity. My discourse community involves people who believe in God and lives up to the guidelines of the Bible. The people from this community are trying to enhance themselves by learning the Bible. An impeccable member attends church, strive for better lives, and aim to help others spread and disseminate words of wisdom. There are several reasons why Christianity is a discourse community. My discourse community has all of the six characteristics defined by John Swales. In my paper, I will describe how my discourse community meets all of Swales characteristics.
