In fostering learning autonomy in vocabulary development for ELLs, teachers require several adjustments that can help embrace the change that will affect the students learning process. Understanding learning autonomy is the first step to knowing how to foster the development of vocabulary for students. Additional tools are helpful in successfully fostering autonomy. Teachers are responsible for creating a curriculum that provides all necessary information on the subject of English. Learning autonomy can be effected through proper curriculum development that will guide learners on the right path of developing their vocabulary. For vocabulary development to work, or take effect, teachers ought to find methods or ways in which they can foster autonomy. Background and Context
The personal interest for this research is that the aspect of learner autonomy relieves the responsibility of teaching for teachers. From the word autonomy, it is simple to understand that this learning process will require the personal initiative of the learner. The question that may linger in many learners mind is whether they will have the practical value of the curriculum to which they should follow. Additionally, many wonder whether through autonomy they will grasp all they are required to and whether they will have the proper knowledge regarding the English language. Megan Clark, (2013), the Use of Technology to Support Vocabulary Development of English Language Learners, provides a strategy with which learners and their teachers can embrace technology in their learning process. According to Clark, technology is a supplementary tool for fostering learner autonomy in vocabulary development. With the use of an iPad, learners have an added advantage to improving their vocabulary. This is facilitated by use of audiovisual components found in the iPad that increase vocabulary knowledge. In this manner, teachers are able to create a learning environment that not only focuses oral language skills, but also the ability to incorporate technological tool for the purposes of learning and growth.
