“Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.” John F. Kennedy. The current state of the education system leaves much to be desired. The United States was once head of the class in respect to the effectiveness of the educational system. This has not been the case in recent years. There are a wide variety of reasons for this decline but what are the core requirements that need to be focused on to become the world leader in education again? A structured education system provides a strong foundation for all involved. For the teachers, it sets the ground rules, expectations, and procedures among other things. Once these are known the teacher can form the direction that he or she would like to take and still meet all requirements. As a part of the checks and balances the principal and school board have a means by which to measure performance of both student and teacher. One thing to bear in mind is that all structures can and should be “remodeled” to adapt to change. There must also be structure at the home of the student. There needs to be a construct at home to establish effective learning habits. Parents must encourage and build effective study habits. There is a time for work and there is a time for play. This needs to be established in order to create an environment conducive to learning. Each and every member of the education system must have buy-in and take ownership in that system. With ownership comes the responsibility to identify shortcoming of that system and continually evolve it to make it better. Educators must take ownership in their students because they are the customers. A student’s failure or success is a reflection of their teachers so it is imperative that the student succeeds. Parents must have sense of ownership in their child’s success. Parents must know what is going on with their child at school and in their personal life. If there are negative indicators, action must be taken to correct these issues. A child’s success is affected by the interactions of the parents. If there are distracters in the personal life of the child it can be detrimental to their education; therefore, these distractions need to be minimized if not removed. Most importantly, the student must care about their education. This, of course, is easier with the display of ownership by the parents and teachers. It is important that he or she is aware of the consequences that can occur later in life if education is taken lightly. They must also be aware of the great rewards that can be reaped by taking ownership in one’s education. With this ownership, they control their destiny positively or
