Current negative social views on Genetic Modification (GM) dictate that research of long-term side effects should be encouraged, alongside the encouragement of GM food production. Genetic modification, or the act of artificially altering the DNA of organisms via a method known as gene splicing (Schmidt 2005, A.527), a method in which a section of DNA in a gene is removed and replaced with DNA from another source. Gene splicing in GM improves a food source known to be vulnerable to a specific disease, insect or an environmental concern such as drought; for example, splicing genes into drought-susceptible maize to make it drought-resistant. Most existing GM foods originate from plants; however, in the future, animals or micro-organisms may be subject to modification (Bawa and Anilakumar 2013, p.1036). GM foods, including crops, vegetables and fruit, cause many controversial debates about their safety for human consumption. Several arguments support the encouragement of GM food sources, in particular, that it will end famine and encourage health and environmental wellbeing (Panse 2014, para.1). Enthusiasts of GM argue the technology increases crop productivity; thus, reducing the need for traditional agricultural methods, such as the use of chemicals. Further, GM technology is likely to improve the production of high-sustenance foods capable of growing in exhausted soils and drought-ridden locations (Schmidt 2005, a.527). GM technology has potential for multiple uses, including improving nutrient content, decreasing allergen capabilities and refining food manufacturing processes. GM has immense potential for eradicating issues with food production including escalating manufacturing costs, disease, pests and environmental intolerances and helping to eliminate difficulties with food supply, particularly in impoverished countries. Conversely, the unknown side effects are a serious cause for concern in terms of antibiotic-resistance and development of new diseases. In conclusion, with provision for continuation of long-term analyses on potential side effects and implementation of regulations to ensure the safety of GM foods, alongside raising the support of people using GM, the benefits of GM foods make it a worthwhile undertaking.
