The current instructional practices follow the direct instruction components. Visual aids, rewards, corrective feedback are present throughout each lesson. The EBP also follows along with the school wide implantation of the Nurtured Heart Approach. When students gain attention from the teachers for positive behavior, it reinforces the practices of the EBP. Providing students with multiple ways of learning, the material that is being presented allows all students an opportunity to learn.
The current instructional practices include the implementation of additional evidence-based practices. The implementation of social stories and rules and routines is present but not reinforced on a daily basis. The student that the EBP’s were implanted for is in the general education setting for part of his day. The general education teacher does not implement these practices in her room. He sits at the back of the class and is not required to follow the same rules of his peers. When he is in the Resource Class, he has rules that he must follow and the use of the EBP’s provides him with the tools to be successful along with the practices that are already in place.


Current Literature

The current literature on differential reinforcement describes the practice as beneficial and appropriate. The results state that without prior teaching of the alternative behavior the practice is not as beneficial. According to current literature, differential reinforcement can be implemented with students with and without autism. Based on the findings multiple aspects improved because of developing an alternative behavior for the undesired behavior. Evidence-based practices create opportunities for the student to perform in the least restrictive environment and have tools that can be utilized in different settings. Students with ASD struggle with many aspects of the general education setting. Behaviors are often a struggle for teachers to identify the cause and implement necessary practices to reduce the number of occurrences.
