Culture is an extremely important part of many people’s existence. Culture helps individuals find an identity and influences their daily lives. However, with culture come misconceptions about groups of people. Understanding and respecting each other’s culture and beliefs are essential to a career in nursing. A nurse interacts with many individuals that come from different cultures. Being able to provide culturally competent care is vital. To demonstrate the power of culture, I am going to reflect and analysis my cultural beliefs.

Our primary heritage is from Slovenia and Germany, therefore, I have grown up in a European background. Both of these European cultures have influenced me to be the best I can be; hence organization, self-maintenance, self-perseverance are my most prevalent attributes. In regards to lifestyle; my mother is a dietitian, hence, I have grown up in a culture of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet. My family has taught me to strive for good verbal and non-verbal communication skills; as well as being blunt, yet friendly towards others. The saying “treat others the way you would want to be treated”, is important here. However, I do have the tendency to be judgmental towards myself as well as others. This trait is connected to the European culture of being a perfectionist. This leads into my family role of being the peace maker; this could be because I am the middle child. Interestingly enough, in the career of nursing; the nurse acts as the middle man between the doctor and the patient. As a future nurse, my views surrounding birth and death practices are similar. I believe it is the person’s life, therefore, it’s their right to choose how they decided to have children and their end of life care. If I were the patient, the nurse should respect and acknowledge my culture to provide culturally competent care. The nurse could achieve this by asking about my cultural preferences. This is extremely important because as the patient, one can feel powerless. Respecting and acknowledging one’s culture, would give the patient a sense of power. Cultural genograms are useful in expanding one’s awareness of the effects of culture on an individual. In turn, this can aid in understanding how other people are a product of his or her culture as well. Cultural genograms are a beneficial tool in providing culturally competent care in nursing. It is essential to remember that there is not an individual culture that is considered to be correct or the standard, but that every culture has a unique view on practices in life. Being culturally sensitive is a critical element in providing culturally competent care.
Issues of culture are often controversial. LaBorde (2010) has noted that culture is always a factor in conflict. Ironically, conflict can provide nurses with an excellent opportunity for developing compassion that will lead nurses unto a place of meeting in which there is a deep respect for differences and equally intentional openness to the possibility of connection. Healthcare practitioners are confronted in a daily basis with the practical manifestation of these issues. In particular, nurses are more confronted by cultural issues than the other healthcare providers because nurses spend majority of their time with patients. However, some nurses are reluctant to confront and discuss the cultural issues because of lack of knowledge in dealing with patients of diverse cultures (Tjale & Villiers, 2004).
A cultural assessment interview is very important when taking care of patients or their families who may be from a different culture than the nurse’s. In order to be able to better take care of a patient, we first need to know their own interpretation of disease and illness within their cultural context, values, and beliefs. There are cultures that have very different views on things such as family dynamics and health care than what I’m used to. For example, there are some cultures that do not believe in seeking healthcare when they are ill or receiving medications or blood if needed. However, my family always believed in taking us to the doctor and taking medications when we were ill. There are also some cultures that have very large families that they are very close to however I always had a small close-knit family. I am able to see how these different scenarios could affect the nursing care provided by assuming that other people and families have the same beliefs that my family had growing up. Each culture has their own set of beliefs and values that are shared among groups of people which influences personality, language, lifestyles, house hold, level modesty, social standings, foods, health treatment and identity. Working with different cultures is inevitable in nursing. As nurses we must be open to the challenges of working with different cultures and finding creative solutions to the health care challenges we may experience when caring for patients that are of a different culture. “Culture is an organized group of learned responses, a system of ready-made solutions to the problems people face that is learned through interactions with others in society” (Seibert, Stridh-Igo, & Zimmerman, 2001, p. 143). Characteristics can be as diverse as ethnic background, language spoken, gender status, physical appearance, race, and religion to name a few. Migration from various countries is creating a diverse population with different cultures and languages within the United States. Due to these cultural differences and lack of knowledge, disparities are increasing. Studies have shown that both language barriers and lack of cultural customs can hinder the services provided to the patient by the healthcare worker (Renzaho, Romios, Crock, & Sonderlund, 2013). This study provided a positive outcome when communication and cultural mutual understanding took place and patients had a more positive health outcome.
