Summary
I read the article Culture and Adolescence Development by Chuansheng Chen and Susan Farruggia. This article is mainly about adolescence and how different things can affect the process. Adolescence is a change in a child to become an adult. The changes in the kids include the change in hormone levels, brain development, and body growth. Studies have shown that in the days before industrialization, some cultures would have big events or ceremonies to celebrate children becoming adults. Depending on the culture some kids don’t have a big transition because they grew up having responsibilities of an adult. Adolescence can cause high hormone levels and also a higher risk of bad or criminal behavior. Researchers such as Robert Klein believe

For example a researcher named Bogin found that 20 year olds from Netherland are taller then 20 year olds from Africa. Africa is in poverty so they often sufferer from illness that prevent growth. It relates to the text because they both state the stages in growth and how different cultures affect the way people develop. I think the article goes more in detail with the different types of research and it also has comparisons of the stages in different cultures.
Reflection I agree with the article’s main topic. I do think culture has a lot to do with how a person grows up. My mom was very sheltering, which is why I didn’t like to leave her side when I was younger. I also think what you eat and you’re resources have a big influence on development. If someone has more money they have more of an opportunity to get better resources.
Field Application
For this section I asked my mom the questions.

I’m not really interested or comfortable with change or trying new things. She believes this is the case because growing up we didn’t really go out much and try new things. She also said that moving was really hard for me and it took time for me to adjust.
How was art expressed in your home to reflect your culture? What did your family value most about art and what was its significance?
No one in my family is creative or artistic expect for my sister and I. Growing up I wasn’t really into art. I didn’t know I wanted to be a photographer until my junior year in high school when I took photography classes. I realized I was decent and decided to go to school to become better at it and to also learn the history behind it.
Do you agree or disagree with the observations of the people you are interacting with? Explain why.
I do agree with what my mom says. I was very shy and it was hard for me to venture out and do my own thing. I wasn’t adventurous and I’m still not. I think it was because of the move. Doing new things scare me and I don’t know if I’m going to like the outcome of whatever I try. I think I still have room for improvement and room to grow up more and come more out of my shell. I do think I came a long way and I’m very happy with the person I have
We are introduced to adolescence in the 5th stage of development. Adolescence begins for boys around the age of 14 and continues up until the age of 21 years of age. At this stage of development, there are many changes that occur emotionally, physically, sexually and spiritually (McGoldrick, Carter, & Garcia Preto, 2011). At this time, adolescent kids are going through changes in their body. They are dealing with coming into their own sexuality. Skills pertaining to social skills and social relationships are being developed through experience. Adolescents are also increasing their skills of physical and mental coordination, such as learning about the world and working on their own coordination. Adolescence is also characterized by learning their own identity and where they fit in the world, as well as learning their relationship with peers and those around them. Spiritual identity is also developed along with a deeper understanding of life. Independence is something that is also weighing on the mind of an adolescent. Overall changes in the family structure can also occur when a child of this age reaches this
The environment in which you live shapes up your life, it determines who you become. Many people grow up in a great environment full of good influences, but that's not the case for everyone. There's several children that grow in an environment that has many negative influences especially for children. For instance, in the book Black Boy Richard Wright grew up in an environment full of violence, poverty, and racism. Those traits affected Richard Wright throughout his entire life. Richard Wright had trouble adapting to many things in life, and struggled a lot
I made my own stage of human development, Piaget’s theory as stage one when the baby is born and is making sense of the world. Stage two Vygotsky, as the baby grows and starts understanding and interacting with family it then starts getting influenced by the cultural perspectives. And when the baby has matured enough to understand how the society and culture works as influence of human development then Bronfenbrenner’s argument comes on stage three.
Culture is the pattern of thinking and behavior in which people living in a particular social group learn, create and share. Through this, others can distinguish to which society does a person belongs to. The way a person dress, the way he talks and how he thinks about something shows his identity. This essay will look at how juvenile prison culture shapes the life and gives meaning to a young man called Dude. The essay will further look into specific aspects of culture, such as kinship and family and the guidance they provide, or not, that affects how his life gives him meaning. Including connections to the prison system. I will also expand on the idea of pollution in the Detroit community and on how one interprets that can give a child less
This time I moved to Warren, Michigan and I attended my last year of elementary school with brand new people. The process of getting to know people took me a long time. I became the shy student that did not take part in any school activity again because I was afraid I would be judged on everything I did. As the years went by I started meeting new people each year. It is now my Senior year of High School and I attend three different schools: CPC, Cousino, and Macomb Community College, I can finally say that I am gaining my confidence back.
Adolescence is a transition which has no fixed time limits. However, the changes that occur at this time are so significant that it is useful to talk about adolescence as a distinct period of human life cycle. This period ranges from biological changes to changes in behavior and social status, thus making it difficult to specify its limits exactly (Damon, 2008). Adolescence begins with puberty, i.e. a series of physiological changes that lead to full development of the sexual organs and the ability to breed and sex. The time interval that elapses begins at 11 to 12 years and extends to 18 to 20. However we cannot associate to a 13 with one 18 years. Let us talk about early adolescence between 11 to 14 years, which coincides with puberty, and after a second period of youth, or late adolescence between 15-20 years. Its extension to adulthood depends on social, cultural, environmental as well as personal adaptation.
Culture, where and how a person is raised, affects a person no matter how much they dislike the way they are being taught the ways of life. However, moving to different places as a child and coun...
In example, according to the Euro-Western view, adolescence is characterised by the interaction between the individual’s biological development and the demands requested by the industrial and post-industrial societies. Although adolescence is globally referred to as the period in life that groups individuals from 12 to 18 years, each individual’s development varies within different countries and cultures. According to the Euro-Western world, adolescence is a time in life that is characterised by experimentation, fun as well as personal growth that will later lead the individual to become a full adult. However, not every young individual experiences this positive and fun side of this life stage. In fact, adolescence is characterised by the hormonal changes that occur during puberty, which are argued to influence adolescents’ behaviour. Hall (cited in Drewery and Claiborne, 2010) argued that due to the effects caused by puberty, young individuals often experience tension, conflicts with their parents and peers, as well as critical mood changes. In line with Hall, Freud (cited in Drewery and Claiborne, 2010) argues that adolescence is a life stage in which it is hard to maintain a steady equilibrium. For these reasons, adolescence can still be considered a “problematic” stage in life, yet it is not necessary true that these conflicts are triggered by biological changes (Drewery and Claiborne,
Three factors are important in the development of adolescence as a distinct stage of the life cycle. The first factor is education. Young children are required to spend many years in school and state laws make education mandatory up to the age of 16. The second factor that separates young people in a different type of group is the exclusion of youth from the labor force. In many states, child labor laws keep people from going to the labor force until they hit the age of 16. Adolescents usually work part time while still going to school. The third factor is the rise of adolescence as a distinct stage of the ...
The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition defines Culture as the “shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization. These shared patterns identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group.” (Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition)
Adolescence is a period of transition between the ages of 13 – 19, after childhood but before adulthood. Adolescence can be a difficult period in a teenager's life. Many teenagers do not know how to react or how to adapt to all of the physical, social, and psychological changes that occur during this period. Some adolescents pass through this period without problem, while for others, it is a period of torture, discomfort, and anxiety. With all the biological and social pressures that occur during adolescence, many teens fail to assume their identity. Sometimes family and society does not help to make this task easier. Challenges teenagers face due to biology and society are body image, hormonal changes, social and parental pressures, family problems, school pressures, alcohol, drug abuse, homosexuality, and suicide.
There is many different factors that determine personality and development, from environmental, genetics, and of course, the culture someone grows up. This can vary across the globe in different geological locations. It is impossible to say how much influence culture has on specific psychological development or personality. Some emotion such as happiness can be subjective and it is hard to measure the rate of happiness when contrasted with a different part of the world. Many scholars point out that wealthier and developed nations report higher feelings of well-being. (Eunkook M. Suh) Despite this association with income and well-being, there are other factors at play. In developed Western societies, they have more social services that could influence personal happiness within cultures.
To be a teenager is to be in a time of fluctuation and more often than not in western society, a time of rebellion. There are certain rituals that take place during the teens such as socializing with friends in a place other than school, more responsibilities around the house and less juvenile relationships with members of the opposite sex. Biologically teenagers change dramatically, with girls usually starting their periods and maturing into a phase where their bodies get ready to have children whereas boys develop facial hair, their voices deepen and other matters. They also become more aware of themselves sexually and it is this period in which most people are experimental with their sexuality as well as drugs and their own personal style.
Child growth and development is a process that consists of some building blocks, which are components that combine in an infinite number of ways (Cherry, n.d.). As a result of the variations of building blocks in a child’s development, educators, psychologists, and philosophers have been constantly engaged in the debate of nature versus nurture debate. Many researchers agree that child development is a complex interaction between his/her genetic background (nature) and his/her environment (nurture). In essence, some developmental aspects are strongly affected by biology whereas other aspects are influenced by environmental factors. From the onset of an individu...
In other words, developmental stages are a human changes, physical structure, thoughts or behavior in biological or human experience. For Instance, developmental psychology has some developmental periods produce during the life span that emotional, physical, and behavioral changes. These are developmental stage changes, prenatal, infancy, toddler, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood, and older adulthood. In addition, these developmental changes have produced by culture and how beliefs have each person. For example, Mexican culture is more collectivist culture that Mexicans families tend to stay together and don 't separate from their relatives. Consequently, a child has been more stimulation of being more independent with a family support if a mother stays with a baby that called part of the culture. Even though, a person has changed for different factors are not only, but also for culture or society. For example, the environment makes a person does not feel comfortable in a particular place and she/he shall be change her/his behavior or mood. According to Eimas & Lipsitt, found “researcher dealing with different behavior phenomena or processes,” it explains how easier the behavior should be changed (1973). After that, this a good example to understand biological and behavioral
