Creating culturally relevant classrooms is a growing priority for educators in our rapidly changing Canadian society. This need stems from the more than 200 ethnic groups reported to reside in Canada (Statistics Canada, “Ethnic ancestry,” para.1). A key factor in the success of a culturally relevant classroom is an educator who understands their own culture. Educators must have an understanding of the unique individuals from different culture groups in the class. It is due to the cultural diversity of individuals that culture must be included in the curriculum. Educators need to provide instruction to accommodate all individual cultures in their classroom. Positive classroom environments and climates induce diverse student learning. Development of unbiased assessment practices provide students with a fair assessment. Professional training will provide teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to implement culture into their classrooms. In this ever changing society, culturally relevant teaching must be implemented with teachers, the curriculum, instructional strategies, classroom climate, assessment, and professional development of teachers.
Culturally responsive teaching begins with educators. Teachers play a significant role in how children view, respect, and interact with other children (Tiedt & Tiedt, 1995, p. 1). Teachers must learn about their own cultural background and personal beliefs, because these beliefs can have a negative influence on the students in the classroom (Nelson & Guerra, 2014, p. 70).
