Cultural Diversity In the world today, culture and lifestyles vary to the extreme. Many people with different cultures live in the United States and all across the world. In my opinion, I think that a lot of people think that they are close-minded because we do not believe in other religions or cultures, because of what we believe in or how we were raised. In a lot of cases, what the parent believes in or values has a huge impact on what the child or children will believe in. When I think of culture, I think that it means the beliefs, ideas, traditions, and behaviors that people portray that are passed down from one generation to the next. When it comes to cultural diversity, it means people from different races, nationalities, religions, and sexes coming together to form a specific community, group or organization. I am going to discuss three activities for parents and students at my school that will honor cultural diversity.

This will help them know that people of all genders, ethnicity, and appearances can be positive role models to them. In addition to doing these activities, the teachers can also have a multicultural classroom by having posters that depict different cultural groups, have students mark on a map where their ancestors came from, and have signs in different languages. According to the League website “When you respect diversity in the classroom, you will be able to create an atmosphere in which participants can engage in active, collaborative learning and substantive discussions” (League, 2006). This will make the students feel more comfortable being in the classroom, and also help them learn about the different cultures around them. Family’s beliefs and values may be different for some and in other cultures they may not be accepted. As teachers, we have to learn about different cultures and expand our knowledge so families could feel more accepted. In the book, Anti- Bias Education for young children and ourselves by Louise Derman-Sparks & Julie Olsen Edwards, talks about how culture and fairness involves two dimensions, children’s development of a positive culture, identity, and their respectful interactions with other cultures. With these two dimensions, it will help the child to continue to express their home culture at school while learning the different cultures at school with their classmates. In Haiti, the family is the most important aspect of their culture. When making important decisions, especially involving the health of a family member, the family is consulted. Family is so important to the culture that everything a person does is reflected onto the family. Everyone represents the family they are in. Because of this, every Haitian family has a reputation which can affect its status and respect in society. Families are so close to one another that it is mandatory to visit a sick member, even if they live far away. In a healthcare context, this can lead to a large number of visitors.20
These lessons are important in the classroom for several reasons. First off, we as teachers need to find ways to make sure that students from all ethnic backgrounds are included in classroom discussions and that they have the ability to apply themselves to the material taught in the classroom. Culture can be characterized with aspects like bias, discrimination, diversity, emancipation, oppression, prejudice, racism and stigma.
I will always use different learning styles. Also, I will not “favorite” a certain race or ethnicity. I will involve my students in creating a diverse classroom by them always questioning, “Is this fair?” “Should we judge based off of race or language?” In my classroom, my students will be challenged to do one of two tasks. The first task will be to research the different races, ethnicities, religions, language, or social class and why it is important to represent diversity or acceptance. The second task will be to research the different issues in schools when diversity was not represented in a classroom. The students will be given the resources to complete one of the following tasks each week. The resources will include books and several websites. It is important for students to understand the different cultures within the United States. By the students understanding the many different cultures could help them be more accepting and not judge a person based on their race, language, religion, or any other culture identification. Diversity in a classroom is important. Both teachers and students should value and respect the different cultures. A teacher should represent positivity towards the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity is the way of life common to a group of people. It consists of values, attitudes, and beliefs that influence their traditions and behavior. From my experiences, I feel that in my community, every family had a similar culture and even if there were differences from family to family, everyone could relate to the made aspects of culture. According to Cox & Blake (1991), developing an organizational culture that values cultural diversity in the workplace is one of the spheres of activity in the management of cultural diversity (p.46). As part of a valuing diversity approach, organizational leaders should ensure that the organization is flexible enough to accommodate employees from different cultural backgrounds. The process of developing an organizational culture that values cultural diversity includes valuing cultural differences, promoting cultural inclusion, and treating cultural differences as prevailing value systems.
Diversity in classrooms can open student’s minds to all the world has to offer. We need to be aware of the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity includes: bi-racial, adoptive, immigrant, gay, and step-families. It is a large majority of the students today even in my generation. Focusing on making a balanced curriculum that exposes the students to all of these different backgrounds is very important. In the modern world it is very important to understand the terms “globalization” and “culture”. Globalization is a process which involves changes in the natural human life. In other words we may call it as changes in the culture of that particular human being or any other particular group. Culture of a group or particular person mainly tells about the life of people or person, living traditions, historical values, religious matters in that particular social system. So we could say culture is a subsystem with in a lager social system.
Implementing diversity training into the curriculum can better help students relate to each other. Teaching students to be aware of nonverbal cues as well as different cultural conventions can help create and enforce personal boundaries and increase tolerance between students. If this is implemented and enforced correctly, it would help the students to feel safe and comfortable with each other because they would know that respecting one another is a classroom expectation.
