Not only is our patient population changing but also our workforce from nursing to clinical support staff. It will affect my nursing practice because it will make me put into practice what I learned about the patients’ beliefs and cultural diversity and how it relates to their health and illness (AACN, 2008). This academic program will give me the ability to integrate cultural sensitivity throughout the assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation process. It will also assist me in the analysis of research and data collection and the ability to apply the best evidence to provide best culturally competent care. The curriculum will also teach me leadership skills that will assist me in advocating for diverse and vulnerable populations so, that all can receive culturally congruent care to have the best possible patient experience and the best possible outcome.
Being culturally aware and knowledgeable is a must when working in any type of healthcare field. In our society today, we have an array of different cultures and making patients feel comfortable and at easy is our primary goal. Diversity training is something that is a must for each healthcare professional and should be the basis of our healthcare education.

The healthcare needs of Americans are increasingly complex and healthcare reforms are charging providers at all levels to achieve significant improvements in the quality of the care provided. Standards of nursing care mandated by various practice and regulatory agencies such as the American Nurses Association (ANA), state licensing bodies, The Joint Commission (TJC) and facility practice policies required registered nurses to maintain competence in the care of individuals and families of diverse cultural backgrounds. In fact, TJC (the independent accrediting body for healthcare facilities that receive payment from Medicare) designates lesbian, gay, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) persons as one such population warranting culturally competent care.
Transcultural nursing requires us to care for our patients by providing culturally sensitive care to a broad spectrum of patients. The purpose of this post is to describe cultural baggage, ethnocentrism, cultural imposition, prejudice, discrimination, and cultural congruence. I will also give an example of each term to help you understand the terminology related to nursing care. I will define cultural self-assessment and explain why it is valuable for nurses to understand what their own self-assessment means. Finally, I will describe the five steps to delivering culturally congruent nursing care and how I have applied these concepts to my nursing practice.
The term culture is defined as “the thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, and institutions of racial, ethnic, religious, or social groups” (Potter & Perry, 2013). With the increase of culturally diverse populations in the United States, it is important for nurses to practice cultural competence. Cultural competence is the ability to acquire specific behaviors, skills, attitudes, and policies in a system that permits “effective work in a cross-cultural setting” (OMH, 2013). Being culturally competent is essential because nurses who acknowledges and respects a patient’s health beliefs and practices are more likely to have positive health outcomes (OMH, 2012). Every culture has certain views and attitudes concerning health. The Jewish (also referred to as Jews), in particular, have intriguing health practices and beliefs that health care providers need to be aware of.

Leininger’s theory of cultural care diversity and universality is about caring, which is the essence of nursing and is recognized in the theory of basic human needs. Her theory incorporates anthropology, which focuses towards caring, culture values, and pattern rather than medical symptoms and treatments. Concepts of Leininger’s theory revolves around caring, which is essential for growth, development and survival. Leininger’s transcultural nursing is our “‘cultural knowledge that is used in our actions to promote positive health behavior among patients and foster culturally sensitive and congruent care’ (Campesino, 2008)” (Posner p.151). Providing client centered care not only enables trust, but also fulfills the patient’s potential health needs and nursing roles with the best outcome. I believe it is important to understand that America has more demands for cultural diversity; therefore, we must be able to meet these demands with the appropriate interventions. Cultural misunderstandings and applying inappropriate interventions become a cultural stress for the nurse-patient relationship; distrust could lead to nurses being unable to collect the necessary information to effectively provide the right care. Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. Diversity and inclusion should also apply to humans by bringing people together who are different it can creates a whole that is enhanced by the uniqueness of each individual.
As a nurse strive to provide culturally sensitive care, they must recognize how their client's and their perceptions are similiar as well as different. Nurse enhance their ability to provide client-centered care by reflecting on how their beliefs and values impact the nurse-patient relationship. To provide appropriate patient care, the nurse must understand her/his culture and that of the nurse profession. Cultural biases can be particularly difficult to identify when the nurse and client are of a similar cultural backgroup. When we recognize and know a culture, we will know what is right for our patient, and thus may impose our own values on the client by assuming our values are their values. Characteristics can be as diverse as ethnic background, language spoken, gender status, physical appearance, race, and religion to name a few. Migration from various countries is creating a diverse population with different cultures and languages within the United States. Due to these cultural differences and lack of knowledge, disparities are increasing. Studies have shown that both language barriers and lack of cultural customs can hinder the services provided to the patient by the healthcare worker (Renzaho, Romios, Crock, & Sonderlund, 2013). This study provided a positive outcome when communication and cultural mutual understanding took place and patients had a more positive health outcome. It is very important that nurses are diversified in various cultures in order to better care for our patients. According to Mareno and Hart (2014), cultural competency has become one of the core values being taught in nursing programs. Their study showed that the perceived level of cultural awareness and skills among the nurses provided was low. Awareness and knowledge levels increased with higher education. We need to be aware of the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity includes: bi-racial, adoptive, immigrant, gay, and step-families. It is a large majority of the students today even in my generation. Focusing on making a balanced curriculum that exposes the students to all of these different backgrounds is very important. I know that it is likely that a teacher will not be able to cater to every student, but it is important to involve each of them. There is a large percentage of students that have dropped out due to the lack of having a connection with the curriculum. In the future, the world will only become more diverse. People should learn to appreciate it by acknowledging the differences around them. Sometimes people are scared that “recognizing differences will divide people from each other. However, learning about cultural differences can actually bring people closer together” ( “Section 1”). It would be better if people became closer together instead of growing apart because of discrimination and other mistreatment. Building relationships with different cultures should be a goal of everyone and even nations as a whole. Each group has different strengths that can benefit the the community altogether. Since the world will definitely become more diverse, it is important to be informed about cultural groups so you can become more marketable and succeed in a diverse world.
