This paper will focus upon resources in the Philadelphia area that provide services to individuals in the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community. The primary focus being upon individuals who are transgender. Transgender individuals face a level of stigma and discrimination that far exceeds that of their(LGB) peers. Integration into the community is even more difficult and often puts them at risk for abuse from individuals who are transphobic (Nuttbrock, et.al, 2015).
The Mazzoni Center provides a wide array of services for the transgender community in Philadelphia. This includes legal services to ensure that their rights, legal needs are met from an approach that epitomizes cultural competence, dignity and respect for their individuality. Mazzoni provides transgender individuals with support groups, advocacy from discrimination, family law, public policy, and legal assistance for issues specifically faced by transgender adults, adolescents, and children. The Mazzoni Center has been in existence for 37 years servicing the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community.
Philadelphia FIGHT is another resource for the transgender community and the LGBTQ community at large. Philadelphia FIGHT is a “comprehensive health services agency offering medical care, client education, cutting-edge research, and advocacy for individuals in the LGBTQ community" (Philadelphia FIGHT, Homepage: 2015). Fight offers an array of services geared towards the LGBTQ community. When Fight was founded in 1990, the HIV/AIDS epidemic most heavily affected the LGBT population. Finally, the research conducted on each of the resources presented in this paper, show they continue to be up to date and relevant regarding the current trends and issues associated with the population that they serve. They provide opportunity for individual to get support while learning to advocate for themselves, and find their voice and place in society. Negative attitudes towards this community will take time, education, and ongoing advocacy efforts eradicate (Tompkins, Shields, Hillman, & White, 2015). Agencies like the ones highlighted in this paper will continue to be beacons for change within the transgender community.
