Modern Values In The Crucible

In today’s society many people are led to believe that the black and white are clearly distinguished, however this is not always the case and there is always a grey world behind the façade of our growing society. Arthur Miller wrote the Crucible during the Cold War in America, 1953, to implicitly represent McCathyism at the time. He believed lurking in small corners of any period of time are those who will pursue prosperity by making dangerous and moral compromises. Hence, it is crucial for us to evaluate the actions of one of the major characters in this classic literature, as provides a window into history. But is it right to condemn a fictional character based on our modern values?
Societies had undergone many transformations since 1953,
In results, some people got hang for maintaining their values, whilst others made deceitful charges, going against their values, to live. Hence Abigail successfully created hysteria in society and became the “moral entrepreneurs” and as in this time it was rebellious to speak of the truth, people would listen to Abigail, in belief of being safe so later making her “…an official of court…” (Miller, 1953. P.58.), and is recognised are doing “weight work”. This once again, clearly highlights her motivation is the strong desire for power and a voice in society, she would not mind putting people to their death or forcing them to go against their morals and beliefs to lie and condemn others. However, earlier in the play, she expresses that witchcraft is not present by telling Parris “…the rumour of witchcraft... you’d best …deny it yourself…” (Miller, 1953. P.18.), thus by condemning others she is manipulating others and herself into believing on a false charge and going against the bible, committing the sin of lying.
