This article is about the study of math instruction in the classrooms. Math instruction varies in many different countries across the world. Unfortunately the United States ranks very poorly in math and reading. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), test scores were lower in the U.S when compared to other countries. Countries such as, Japan and Germany scored higher in math and reading. Dr. James Stigler from UCLA wanted to figure out how to improve math instruction in the U.S. Dr. Stigler used the Third International Math and Science Study (TIMSS), to motivate himself to survey math teachers from Japan, Germany and the United States. He videotaped the math teachers and discussed his research with an internal panel.
This type of study is called a cross-cultural, which allowed him to learn new information about our instruction. He realized that different cultural backgrounds influence the classrooms. TIMSS video studies compared the differences in teaching training, teaching goals, math lessons and classroom environment. There are many questions that can be answered using the information gained from this study. Some of the questions include, “Can we change the way Americans teach?” and “Why are we so different?” Over all this article talks about why this study is important, what we can learn from it and implications for improving the philosophies for math instruction.
The philosophies for teaching math in American and Germany are both similar and different. Math instruction in the American classroom was interrupted more than Germany. I think that once we are able to experience different philosophies we can take them serious. Different countries can come together to share their teaching styles.
The common core addresses these problems by providing basic standards for every student in every country. Students are able to “graduate from high school with skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live” (Common Core State Standards Initiative). Although different countries may teach differently their students are still learning the same standards.
Every kid deserves the chance to be successful and I think the more we learn from each other the more successful our students will be.
