Critique: Why Tipping is Wrong The idea of tipping has always been normal to myself, as I was a kid and still now I see my parents leaving tips for the waiter/waitress when we go out to eat. It never occurred to me until I got older that it was hard for these workers to get by as their salary depended upon their tips. Once I read Saru Jayaraman’s article on “Why Tipping is Wrong” I was unsure of what I was getting myself into. However, it brought light and told how we should be getting rid of tips and giving the workers a fair and decent salary. Now, Saru goes on to explain how a New York restaurateur Danny Meyers plans on getting rid of the tipping system and creating a set minimum wage of $15. It was a good tool to use as he brought up how back then they wanted to get rid of tipping as well towards the end of the nineteenth century for it was “undemocratic and un-American.” (Saru Jayaraman) With just that sentence it gave enough power to push the idea of creating a salary instead. He then proceeds to tell how one writer believed the idea of tipping was supposed to be left for “Negroes”. Showing how it’s not just a financial issue, but it can be brought down to a personal level to where they can become vulnerable and humiliated in public by others. “And most tipped workers are not fancy steakhouse servers: they are women working at places like IHOP, Applebee’s and Olive Garden.” (Saru Jayaraman) Making this a rising issue, so if they did have this minimum wage and had a vulgar customer, then they could give the customer poor service for how they’re treating the waiters/waitress.
