1In the article, The Critical Importance of Retrieval for Learning, Jeffery D. Karpicke and Henry L. Roediger III expound on the long standing assumptions regarding the effects of repeated studying and repeated testing on learning in order to improve long-term retention on learning material. Recently studies have shown that research can occur during testing, contradictory to the traditional beliefs that learning occurs while people study and encode material. Another purpose of this research and this article was to examine a students’ assessments of their own learning, after getting a set of material under repeated study or repeated testing. Finally, The Critical Importance of Retrieval for Learning, explained further the relationship of speed learning and the rate in which something is forgotten. It was discovered that learning can indeed occur during testing, testing does not have to be solely as an assessment for measuring knowledge and the rate of forgetting material does not correlate to the speed of which something is learned. In the experiment conducted, college students were given a list of vocabulary in a foreign language. The Swahili- English word list was studied and tested over four varying conditions. The first condition consisted of the students studied and were tested over the list in its entirety. In the second condition, once students recalled a pair it was dropped from the study list immediately but tested on later. In the third condition, once students recalled a pair it was dropped from the testing list immediately but remained studied on later. In my classroom I would implement take pre-test for homework and/or extra credit assignments, as well as implement classroom activities such as games where testing occurs in a communal group setting. Retrieval is easier when related pieces of information are stored in close association with one another (Ormord p. 212). Therefore, I would have students get in pairs and test each other on the information as soon as the lesson is over as a form of review and test preparation. Throughout the lesson play, I could implement questions of the day, testing to see if students can recall material from previous lessons, assigned readings, and/or homework. These methods would use repeated retrieval in various forms of testing to produce greater long-term retention.
