Introduction
Nurses are faced with critical decisions making daily which can impact patients including those around the patients. According to a study, it discovered that “nurses made decisions on the average of 30 seconds” (Bucknall, 1996). At work in every 30 seconds, nurses are faced with the decision of right or wrong related to life or death, healthiness, sickness, success or calamity. As a student, critical thinking skills is taught in nursing school which is put into practice every day at work. Critical decision making involves examine and predicting the possible consequence of an action. "Key to critical thinking is the ability to see multiple sides of a scenario, rather than responding from emotion or going by the gut" (Critical thinking, 2015). This is a case study about lab technician Mike, who had the opportunity of making a decision, but the choice he made was with serious ramification that affected the patient, the institution, and everyone around the patient. With this paper, the writer is going to focus on a description of the scenario that included Mike, who is a lab technician, his consequences of failure to report an incident, impact of decision on patient safety, risk for litigation on the organization, the impact of workload on other hospital department, ways Mike manager dealt with the issue with Mike and approach with other staff to avoid reoccurrence.

Mike had the habit of coming late often to work but had promised his supervisor that he would be coming on time since his supervision won either to stopped coming late or face job terminated. Conclusion
Patients safety is very important especially in the health care organization. If we as staff consider our patients first, do the right thing, establish good communication and collaboration with colleagues, supervisor and manager, this would help a long way in installing safety in our institution. We should never risk patient safety for termination or punishment if our gout tells us that we are doing the right thing for our patients. How does it feel to see our patients we supposed to help in a serious pain and injury for fear of securing our job? That is not the ethics of nursing to save lives. We must assess situation from all angles and have the interest of our patient at heart before making a decision.
