I talked to Caleb about the educational requirements for the field and I learned that the corrections field (at least entry level) is relatively easy for one to make entry into. The first step is to simply put your resume and application together and send it in. If you make it past the interview process and get selected, you will begin your initial training. This first phase is a four week stretch that is spent entirely in the class room. After that your probationary year begins and you are put to work in the jail/prison, wherever you were hired. Within that probationary year you have to attend a three week training course in Glynco, GA at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, which consist of more classroom instruction as well as some self-defense instruction. Once you complete that training and make it through your probationary year, you are on your way to moving up in the corrections world.
Salary is one reason why court appointed lawyers don't go up and beyond their call of duty for their clients. Studies show on an average, people will be sentenced harder or longer if he/she is represented by a court-appointed lawyer rather than a public defender (Green, 2001). Court-appointed lawyers are paid by the state on a case-by-case basis. Court appointed counsel's paycheck varies by offense. The defense counsel will typically only be paid 112.00 to 326.00 for normal lower class cases. Felony punishment by more than twenty years in prison can give up to 1,196.00 for the court appointed lawyer (Green, 2001). Public defenders or "hired lawyers" are salaried state employees. If you hire a lawyer they usually charge about 55.00 an hour during court for their work and 75.00 an hour for out of court (Green, 2001). The figures show clearly the wide range of difference between the incomes of each type of lawyer. Court appointed lawyers will not work more then what their pay will allow them.
In discussions of law enforcement one controversial issue has been whether liberal arts courses are necessary or should be required. In “The New Liberal Arts” Sanford J. Ungar believes that liberal arts are crucial to any professional career. Mike Rose however disagrees, and suggests that a college education in general is not necessarily a must. Although both articles make a good argument, I concur with Ungar. The liberal arts are the foundation in almost any professional field, and teach students how to adapt, especially in law enforcement.
