Crime prevention is an adequate and economical way to curtail crime. Enforcing and maintaining effective and productive crime prevention programs can be a major factor in creating safe and secure communities by decreasing the level of crime. In this essay, I will identify a crime prevention program and describe its components, philosophy, and goals. I will describe the strengths, weaknesses, ethical issues and the effectiveness of the program.
Over the past thirty years, gun-affiliated injuries and deaths have increased among youth. Most of the youth involved in accidental shootings and suicides most often acquire the gun from their own home. Hands Without Guns (HWG) was started in 1995 by the Educational Fund to End Handgun Violence, to tackle this growing problem. The mission of Hands Without Guns is to advocate a public health and education campaign to transform attitudes of 12 to 18 year old youth about violence and gun ownership by emphasizing supportive youth programs (ucanchicago, 2013).
There are three components of Hands Without Guns. The first component involves the usage of television, radio, transportation advertisements and music to produce an expansive media campaign (Office of Justice Programs: U.S. Department of Justice, 2013). Youths see that other youth are connected with positive activities and that their accomplishments are encouraged and commended by adults. The second component involves a sequence of workshops and activities for youth outreach (Office of Justice Programs: U.S. Department of Justice, 2013).
