Within the criminal justice system there are many different types of crimes such as burglary, possession of a deadly weapon, possession of illegal drugs, murder, etc. One crime that occurs more than any of these crimes is sexual assault. Every 109 seconds an american is sexually assaulted, and every 8 minutes that victim is a child, and only 6 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison (rainn.org). Because of the high rate of sexually assaulted victims, people need to be educated and learn the importance of sexual assault, and how to prevent becoming a sexual assault victim.
Sexual assault is any type of forced or coerced sexual contact or behavior that happens without consent. Sexual assault includes rape attempted rape, child molestation, and sexual harassments or threats (womenshealth.gov). The first thing anyone needs before they engage in sexual activity is consent. Consent is a clear yes and just because someone does not say no to sexual activity does not mean they have given consent. Also just because someone has given consent before does not mean the person has given consent a second time consent must be given every time a person engages in sexual activity. Also a person cannot give consent while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Research shows that up to three out of four attackers had been drinking when the attack happened. Some perpetrators use date rape drugs which they slip into drinks or food without the victim 's knowledge. These drugs can cause memory loss so the victim cannot remember what happened.
Sexual assault can have long term effects on a person such as frequent headaches, long term pain, trouble sleeping, poor physical and mental health. One could also experience severe anxiety, stress ...

Because most sexual assaults go unreported on college campuses, offering support groups on college campuses can help individuals cope with the emotional and mental aspect of being sexually assaulted. If a person is sexually assaulted the first thing they should do is get medical attention, and write down everything that happened during the attack. Because most sexually assaulted victims know their perpetrator it is best to stay away from that person and if the person lives close to you say on campus or apartment it is best to relocate where you stay try staying with a friend or in a safe home.
Anyone can be sexually assaulted at any given time, however learning how to prevent one 's chances of becoming sexually assaulted isn’t hard. All you have to do is take action, be precautious, and be educated. Know when to say no and know your limits.
