In the world today, when the average American is standing at the cash register, ready to pay, he or she will likely pull out of their wallet one of the following: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or a Discover Card. What do all of theses names have in common? They are all credit cards, the easy, fast way to pay for purchases when you don’t have cash, the store doesn’t accept checks, you would rather pay at a later date, or a variety of other reasons. Although there are many positive reasons to have a credit card, carrying this small plastic card can also cause many problems if one isn’t prudent and logical when making purchases. When deciding whether to sign up for a credit card or not, one must consider the advantages and disadvantages of having one; it can be resourceful in emergencies, it is safer than carrying large amounts of cash, and it is an effective way of borrowing money for a period of time. On the other hand, there are many disadvantages: if purchases aren’t paid for in a timely manner, the credit card holder will have to pay interest, or if they don’t pay it negatively affects their credit score, as well as creates unwanted debt. Overall, having a credit card is an important and serious decision that must be weighed carefully, because there are many pitfalls to look out for, but with smart choices and good decision making skills a credit card can be a very useful financial tool.

Credit cards are something that are almost needed in everyday life now, as most dont have the money available to purchase a car or house and so need credit, thus needing credit cards to help build that credit. Those cards are hard to handle, and receiving applications in the mail daily, and commercials appearing on television don’t seem to make the struggle of staying away any easier. This starts to spark an interest. So people begin to think, "I think I 'm responsible enough to get a credit card, I 'll only use it for emergencies." Then the application process begins and it may take a couple times to finally be approved for one. Credit cards: for some they are the paths to financial freedom, for others they are a necessity for daily purchases. During the recent economic crisis, many have sought out to find the cause. One common suspect is the credit card industry, which is comprised of more than six thousand card issuers (Clayton 209). This issue is debated in the two-part article “Should Congress Regulate Credit Card Rates and Fees?” “Yes” and “No.” Tamara Draut, Director of Economic Opportunity, Demos, argues yes, claiming the credit card companies’ ability to adjust terms and interest rates traps cardholders in everlasting debt. On the contrary, Kenneth J. Clayton, Managing Director of Card Policy for the American Bankers Association, argues no, stating that regulating credit card companies would hinder many people from obtaining credit and further damage the economy. Although both Draut and Clayton present strong evidence for some aspects of their arguments, both writers make assumptions which they fail to support and ignore the complexity of the issue, making their arguments overall unpersuasive.
Making improvements on our financial literacy results in a wave of impacts on our economy and the financial health in our society because of responisble behiavior with our finances. If we don 't have credit cards, we can’t build our credit history. If we don 't have a credit history, we aren 't allowed to buy cars or houses with low monthly payments. Having credit cards is a cycle in life because without one thing, we can 't have the other. When people have credit cards they have to use them. It doesn 't help that banks offer many credit cards to people, ending in high debt. Banks also encourage low monthly payments. If people pay low monthly payments, they will never end up paying their credit card debt off. They will probably end up paying for the objects they bought, two or three times. People aren 't forced to pay high monthly payments in order for it to take longer to pay the card off. If it takes longer for a person to pay a credit card debt, the credit card companies will be making a lot of money. I can definitely say I have experienced this because I am always offered to get a credit card. There are many stores that carry their own credit cards, and offer them for their customers. The introduction of the credit card first came around while the economy was booming in the early 1950’s. American consumers were in buy mode and the credit card was a genius idea to let people buy now and pay later.
