The Creation of a Psychopath In the epic poem Beowulf, Grendel is depicted as an evil monster that destroys Herot-hall and kills people for no reason. In the poem, Grendel had filled the Danes with terror as he ravaged their mead-hall and killed their men again and again. He did so without remorse and even took joy in killing, and even eating them. He had stopped, because a great hero, Beowulf, caught and killed him. However, what readers do not hear is why and how Grendel was treated by the Danes. When he was a young little creature, Grendel had been ignored, humiliated and bullied by Danes in Herot-hall. He wanted to fight back, but instead, he decided to give them a second chance. The Danes were ignorant to the fact that the song would bring a mass disaster to them. Whenever Grendel tried to befriend the Danes, they would always run away, hide or even attack him. The men that Grendel attacked were the ones who were especially hateful toward Grendel; as far as Grendel was concerned, they were the real villains who wished to kill him. The innocent ogre attempted to be friendly and talk them out of bullying, but the arrogant Danes did not even try to listen. So. How did Grendel become a murderer and a psychopath? It is true that Grendel’s behavior, destroying Herot hall for twelve years and killing numerous people, cannot completely be justified, but the ones who caused Grendel to become a psychopath could have been saved if they were little bit nicer and warmer to him. For example, there was a famous serial killer in Korea, Yoo Young-Chul, who is a psychopath and killed about ten people.
