Creating an Interactive Web Site with CGI
Introduction
The Internet explosion of the 1990’s has been one of the most revolutionizing business factors of the decade. The Internet allows individuals and businesses to reach each other more effectively at an increasingly lower cost.
However, the most effective method of interaction is two-way interaction. This applies whether the interaction is between two people, a person and a business or two businesses. Basic HTML web pages allow for easy one way interaction. It also allows people to send e-mail back and forth.
More effective web pages allow for immediate two-way interaction. These pages can gather survey data, create shopping carts, check credit ratings or even simply have visitors sign a guest book. Interactive web sites definitely have advantages over their less advanced cousins. Common Gateway Interface (CGI) provides one of the more common formats for designing an interactive site.
This paper will address some of the concepts behind creating an interactive web site with CGI. It will proceed by considering the following points:
1. Background
2. Creating forms
Background
Before explaining how CGI works, it is helpful to gain an overall perspective of how the internet itself functions in connection with the end user. Bruce Gronich of BigNoseBird.com provides a good analogy that will be used throughout this paper. He compares the end user’s browser to a rat searching for food. The garbage can doles out the food when the rat requests it. The garbage can is the server. So, the browser requests information from the server, and the server in return doles out the information that is requested.
The server uses differe...

Conclusion
This paper has been primarily about some of the HTML codes required to put together an interactive web site. It has reviewed how the internet works and how to assemble a form on a browser. The paper has also addressed how the information needs to be formatted so that it can be successfully passed to a cgi script for further processing.

In the middle of 2000s, a new trend started, the web started transforming from static documents linked together into an interactive publishing platform. Suddenly, visitors could leave comments on the web, create accounts on various services a...
In summary, “Internet activities are not most significant in competition, such as informing customers, processing transactions, and procuring inputs”. (Porter, 2001) significant corporate assets--skilled employees, proprietary product, and efficient logistical systems – these factors are the most important to keep competitive advantages. In fact, it is foreseeable that the Internet's evolution will come up in the future involve a shift “in thinking from e-business to business, from e-strategy to strategy”. (Porter, 2001)Only by integrating the Internet into overall strategy will this powerful new technology become an equally powerful force for competitive advantage.
... The history of the internet takes us back to the pioneering of the network and the development of capable technologies. The explosion of the internet’s popularity in the 1990’s was large and dramatic, boosting our economy and then helping to bring it into a major recession. One can only hope that the explosion becomes organized and slightly standardized in the interest of the general public.
Commonly known as the Internet, the world’s largest network is used extensively throughout the world today. Since its creation in 1983, the Internet has continued to grow in popularity and use as a commercial and private communications medium. Millions of people throughout the world use the Internet in a variety of ways, ranging from personal conversations to on-line shopping. According to a survey compiled by Nua Ltd in 1999, the number of Internet users rose from 26 million in 1995 to 205 million in 1999, an increase of almost 700% (Nua Ltd)! With such an explosive increase, how then has the Internet affected us personally, and how has it affected the way we do business? The answers to these questions include changes in the way people obtain information, interact, work, learn and conduct business.Given the Internet’s original purpose is to share information, it is no wonder that the most important asset of the Internet is the wealth of information that can be found on the Internet (Maney 3).
The introduction of the Internet as an additional mass communication media has created new alternatives for information transmission. The ensuing popularity of the Internet has created many challenges that the public sector must deal with. Estimates in 1999 found that there are approximately 171 million Internet users worldwide (Group Computing, Jan/Feb 2000, p. 56). Change in the societal environment has made the Internet an integral part of the American economy.
The internet in its most basic form is a hub in which individuals can communicate with one another. The Internet in a way is a global network of networks connecting millions (if not billions) of computers and people worldwide. Unlike many other services that exist across the planet (both physical and digital), the Internet is decentralized and not one person owns all of it. In fact, there is an organization known as the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) that serves as the regulatory body of the entire internet by establishing international internet protocols that sets the standard for how web pages should be developed (by using the latest version of HTML), how networks can communicate with one another and works with many organizations that develop software around the world on how their products can be utilized with the current of HTML in an accessible and safe manner. Plus, the W3C also creates their own software, which includes tidy, jigsaw, validator, etc. to help making pages more organized, load faster and help with portability when it is time to update the their software or HTML. Each individual computer, called a host, is independent. It is only when a user connects to the network that they are officially connected to a network. A user can choose which Internet services to use through the of a piece of software known as a web browser (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome) which allows grants the user the ability to access the internet. In addition, there are a numerous ways to access the Internet in today’s technological world. Most online services offer access to Internet services such as NetZero or MagicJack. It is also possible to gain access th...
The Internet continues to grow, driven by ever greater amounts of online information and knowledge, commerce, entertainment and social networking.
The Internet and international business is an interesting topic- discussing an area of business that will probably be around for many years and possibly centuries to come. Since its earliest days, the Internet has been a means of communication, an essential tool in almost instant communication.
Less bandwidth required: It requires lower bandwidth because of it does not require to resend the entire page to the server. Consequently, it will be useful for those companies which have lower bandwidth connection. The most important function XMLHttpRequest will be used in this proposed project to enable a light weight request to client side script to server such as between customers to customer care officer [21].
An abundance of popular Internet sites are progressing toward personalization within the confines of their Web presence. All users to the virtual community would enroll using a short but complete registration form directly linked to the main page of the site. The initial form would consist of such straightforward entries as the user's name, e-mail address, ZIP code, time zone, desired username, and password. By using existing technology, the user would be greeted with a "Hello [name]!" message each time that he or she visited the site.
Within this report is information on how Java Script is used on the Internet. This report will contain information that will help you learn about Java Script and its uses on the Internet. It mentions what Java Script is, where it originated and what some of its uses are.JavaScript is a loosely typed scripting language that resembles the programming language C. It is designed to be an extension to HTML and is usually included within HTML scripts. Java Script is object-oriented and has block-structuring features. The Internet has become a key ingredient of strenuous and busy lifestyle. ‘Internet’ has become the central-hub for communication, explorations, connecting with people or for official purposes. Resultantly, Internet growth has led to a plethora of new developments, such as decreased margins for companies as consumers turn more and more to the internet to buy goods and demand the best prices.

The development and design of a basic web page can be a fun yet tricky task. Whether it’s a large commercial web page for business purposes, or a small personal web page about your hobby or family; the process of development is the same. The three major steps leading to the development and design of a basic web page include: information gathering, site layout and design, and HTML (hyper text markup language) conversion.
