The heart, which is the center of the circulatory system, acts as a pump forcing blood though the entire body though the systemic circuit. The heart pumps oxygenated blood out of the left ventricle up into the aorta. From the aorta, blood travels though the arteries and arterioles to the capillaries beds. This is where the delivery of oxygenated blood and nutrients in exchange for waste products occurs. Oxygen poor blood is carried back to the heart by veins that eventually come together to form the vena cava. Oxygen poor blood is carried though the right atrium of the heart then into the right and left lungs, where the oxygen diffuses into the blood from the air in the alveoli and carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood into the air of the alveoli. Though the flow of blood within the circulatory system, and lymph though the lymphatic system, the body is able to stay oxygenated, nourished, eliminated the products of cellular breakdown and bacterial invasion.
All in a largely successful effort to maintain homeostasis though out the human body.
