The Courageous Events in To Kill A Mockingbird
In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus, the father of Jem and Jean Louise (Scout) Finch, always gave his children good advice and encouraging words. Atticus, along with many other characters in the book, was very courageous. There are many courageous events throughout the story that helps keep the reader’s attention. Some of the courageous actions in the book was Scout standing up to Miss Caroline for Walter Cunningham, the towns people helping Ms. Maudie during the fire, the acceptance of Tom Robinson’s case and the heroic actions of Mr. Arthur (Boo) Radley.
It was Scout’s first day of school and it was starting out rough. She had been told that she could not read properly and that she needed to stop reading with Atticus. She was miserable and did not want to be involved with school anymore. One day, a little boy named Walter Cunningham did not have his lunch money. The Cunningham’s are very poor and would not take anything that they could not pay back. Miss Caroline, a new teacher in town, had offered Walter a quarter for his lunch but he would not take it. Miss Caroline kept trying to convince Walter to take the quarter but he refused to. You could see the embarrassment on poor Walter Cunningham’s face. Finally, Scout stood up out of her chair and said, “Miss Caroline, he’s a Cunningham” (20). Scout thought she had made it pretty clear why Walter would not take the quarter. Unfortunately, Miss Caroline was so new in town that she had no idea who the Cunninghams were, forcing Scout to go into more detail with her explanation, “That’s okay, ma’am, you’ll get to know all the county folks after a while. The Cunninghams never took anything they can’t pay back-no church ...

...her foot and felt a grown man lying on the ground unconscious. She ran to the road and seen another man carrying an unconscious Jem back to their house. They soon found out that Mr. Bob Ewell (Mayella’s father) was trying to kill Jem and Scout but then someone came and attacked Mr.Ewell. The person that saved their lives was Mr. Boo Radly. This part of the story was very courageous. Boo Radly had been secluded in his house for as long as Jem and Scout could remember. This action showed how courageous and brave Boo really was.
Harper Lee made To Kill a Mockingbird an unforgettable story to her readers by putting courageous and exciting moments in her book. This book showed the generosity, bravery, and wisdom of some of the characters. This keeps the reader’s attention and never gives them a chance to get bored. So remember, it is always a sin…To Kill A Mockingbird.
