The main idea behind it is that if a man has nothing to lose then he has no reason to fear. As discussed early this does not truly make them brave but rather gives the appearance of bravery.

When Sam arrived at castle black he was truly a coward and most likely would have stayed that way if Jon had not started to believe in him. “Samwell Tarly was no fool.
