I. John snow’s natural courage vs. Sam’s self-proclaimed cowardice. Support 1.
Shortly after meeting Sam john had a thought. “The world was full of cravens who pretended to be heroes; it took a queer sort of courage to admit to cowardice as Samwell Tarly had” (Samuel). This thought shows that even though Sam is a coward he is not afraid to admit it which point to the bravery inside him. Support 2. The main idea behind it is that if a man has nothing to lose then he has no reason to fear. As discussed early this does not truly make them brave but rather gives the appearance of bravery.
III. Sam’s transformation Support 1. When Sam arrived at castle black he was truly a coward and most likely would have stayed that way if Jon had not started to believe in him. “Samwell Tarly was no fool. One night he visited Jon in his cell. “I don’t know what you did,” he said, “but I know you did it.” He looked away shyly. “I’ve never had a friend before.”
“We’re not friends,” Jon said. He put a hand on Sam’s broad shoulder. “We’re brothers”” (Martin 321). This section shows how Sam first found comradery in the Nights Watch. The fact that other people believed in him helped Sam to start believing in himself.
Support 2. as the survivors from an attack by the Others are making their way back to Castle Black Sam and Gilly are set upon by an Other. This is the moment when we see Sam’s true bravery as mentioned before true bravery and courage can only occur when one is afraid. Sam in his terror dose not freeze but instead dose all that he can charging the other and stabbing it with an obsidian blade. Involvement can mean many things, but it’s basically about holding a job, going to school, or participating in a sport. The character of Sam, as stated before, was kicked out of school. So, he didn’t have school keeping him away from deviant behaviors. And then there 's the reveal that Sam can’t write or read well. Sam had made an attempt to get a job at a movie store, but he would 've had to do an application, which required him to write. He was shown to be scared and nervous after he attempted at write on the form. Sam had little involvement in anything because he was a poor writer and reader, which lead him to act more deviant. A final reason as to why Sam acted so deviant, was because had little opportunity in life. He was self conscious about that fact that he couldn 't write, so he never made attempts to move up in the world. He
