Research Question: The courage in a song of ice and fire and how Jon and Sam show the two sides of courage.
1. Jon snow’s natural courage vs. Sam’s self-proclaimed cowardice.
2. Courage and the night’s watch
3. Sam’s transformation
I. John snow’s natural courage vs. Sam’s self-proclaimed cowardice. Support 1.
Shortly after meeting Sam john had a thought. “The world was full of cravens who pretended to be heroes; it took a queer sort of courage to admit to cowardice as Samwell Tarly had” (Samuel). This thought shows that even though Sam is a coward he is not afraid to admit it which point to the bravery inside him. Support 2. Courage and the night’s watch Support 1. In the series, A Song of Ice and Fire there is a lot of importance placed on bravery and courage. “Bran thought about it. 'Can a man still be brave if he 's afraid? ' 'That is the only time a man can be brave, ' his father told him” (Martin, 23). This quote point to the important of fear in bravery for if you fear nothing then are you truly …show more content…
The main idea behind it is that if a man has nothing to lose then he has no reason to fear. As discussed early this does not truly make them brave but rather gives the appearance of bravery.
III. Sam’s transformation Support 1. When Sam arrived at castle black he was truly a coward and most likely would have stayed that way if Jon had not started to believe in him. “Samwell Tarly was no fool. One night he visited Jon in his cell. “I don’t know what you did,” he said, “but I know you did it.” He looked away shyly. “I’ve never had a friend before.”
“We’re not friends,” Jon said. He put a hand on Sam’s broad shoulder. “We’re brothers”” (Martin 321). This section shows how Sam first found comradery in the Nights Watch. The fact that other people believed in him helped Sam to start believing in himself.
Support 2. as the survivors from an attack by the Others are making their way back to Castle Black Sam and Gilly are set upon by an Other. This is the moment when we see Sam’s true bravery as mentioned before true bravery and courage can only occur when one is afraid. Sam in his terror dose not freeze but instead dose all that he can charging the other and stabbing it with an obsidian blade. It is this action that set Sam apart from his other brothers his ability to act even when afraid is what make him
People look up to men who have courage because they can rely on them to stay strong and brave in spite of danger or difficulty. “We felt pressure on our hearts, in dread of that deep rumble and that mighty man, but all the same I spoke up in reply.” Odysseus in the Odyssey expresses courage by answering to the enormous, frightening cyclops even when he and his men knew that they were caught up in a dangerous situation.
Courage is the ladder on which other themes in to kill a mockingbird mount on. With courage people tend to take risks, have strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. How many times have you considered yourself as courageous? At the end of the novel, you see reasons why being courageous could help you as a reader live a better and braver life. In Conclusion, courage is the foundation of integrity.
Courageousness may seem to be measured by the people look on the outside. They look brave, heroic, and have some luck. Now, if someone looked on the inside of that person what would they see. Would they see a mentally strong person with high values in what they believe. On the opposition, the person might find out how scared, mean, and vulnerable they are. Courageousness is how little a person's values are affected when opposition and suffering happen in life. Also, doing things that they fear doing to boost their confidence and defeat their fears, this is courage. In A Separate Peace, The character Finny, who is bright and looking like he is brave all the time might seem to be the obvious candidate for being more courageous than Gene. Gene, who has little bravery an is weak. Gene though is actually the more courageous one because of his willingness to fight for his values and stand up in the face of opposition.
Selkow talked about how Sam would call and leave multiple messages all throughout the night. This showed that Sam wasn’t getting the sleep he needed. A troubling symptom Sam had was when he had thoughts of suicide. This was brought on when Sam was at his depressed stage in his disorder. Towards the end of the documentary, he admits to Ben that he did have thoughts of suicide and at one of those times he almost went through with it.
This lead to one of the biggest questions from the movie, how did he become that way? Hirschi’s Control Theory is a theory that states “that social control depends on people anticipating the consequences of their behavior”(Macionis 248). It was shown in the movie that Sam had a complicated relationship with his family, so his past is a big reason as to why he acts so deviant in the future. On of the four types of social control is attachment. Attachment is family, friends and school relationships. Sam was first introduced as one of Benny’s friends “crazy cousin”. It was clear that he did not enjoy having Sam around. This can reveal that Sam has a weak relationship with his family as a whole because he wasn’t even living with his parents. This would lead Sam to acting deviant without worrying about what they would think of him. It was also later revealed that Sam was kicked out of school based on his actions. Sam never had to worry about his family or school once that relationship broke off. Another type of social control is involvement. Involvement can mean many things, but it’s basically about holding a job, going to school, or participating in a sport. The character of Sam, as stated before, was kicked out of school. So, he didn’t have school keeping him away from deviant behaviors. And then there 's the reveal that Sam can’t write or read well. Sam had made an attempt to get a job at a movie store, but he would 've had to do an application, which required him to write. He was shown to be scared and nervous after he attempted at write on the form. Sam had little involvement in anything because he was a poor writer and reader, which lead him to act more deviant. A final reason as to why Sam acted so deviant, was because had little opportunity in life. He was self conscious about that fact that he couldn 't write, so he never made attempts to move up in the world. He
Mark Twain best described courage when he said that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear” (Twain). Both in The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and Watership Down by Richard Adams, the authors deal with the topic of courage and each share a similar view on it as this quote. Indeed, both authors suggest that courage is not accumulated simply by acts of heroism, but rather by overcoming fears and speaking one’s mind as well. These books are very similar in the way that bravery is displayed through the characters in an uncommon way. Firstly, an example of bravery
Beowulf’s courage is a characteristic of a hero and this is what makes him one as well. In the story he faces his fears multiple times while trying to save others. One example of his courage would be this quote that states "Often, for undaunted courage, fate spares the man it has not already marked." This is a good example because it shows how Beowulf had the courage to stand up against Grendel and defeat him. In addition Beowulf also put himself in danger while he was fighting the dragon even when he knew he probably not make it. This is an extreme example of courage because it frightened him that he would not make it, but he fought the dragon anyway. I think that these examples show Beowulf’s courage and that is
is not like Caroline. By the end of the movie Sam learns a valuable lesson about being her own person and even gets the guy along the way.

He has maintained who he is and allowed it to become apparent through his actions. Samady challenges people that do not acknowledge that he is more than his appearance to “ look at his effect on the world” (13). He was the father that cared for his children, respected his wife, and put the needs of his family before his own. Samady is proud of her father for his selflessness and for possessing this important characteristic even after the war. He was the man that was able to retain so much of himself when loss was inevitable. He might have given up on his chances of becoming an engineering; however, he refused to lose sight of what it took to take care of his
Bravery is like a very trusted friend, it will never let you down. That statement holds true in the great epic of "Beowulf." "Beowulf" is the story of a great hero who comes to the aid of a troubled king. Beowulf hears that king Hrothgar is having trouble and immediately comes to help with no questions asked. he defeats the monster, Grendel, with his bare hands. Beowulf then defeats Grendel's mother along with a dragon until he is fatally injured. Bravery is a very admirable characteristic that few people possess.
Beowulf is one of the oldest heroic poems that exists to this day. Likewise, it has been a theory for many that this poem has inspired authors and screenwriters alike in the creation process of fictional heroes for shows, movies, games, and books. Nonetheless, Beowulf’s trait of a modern-day superhero are shown everywhere. For example, Beowulf is brave, even willing to die for the greater good, he is abnormally stronger than most humans which in a way makes him superior, and he is somewhat of an natural leader that everyone seems to admire. When comparing this character to other fictional characters there is one that particular fits these same characteristics, and that person is Jon Snow. He plays cast in the popular television show, Game of Thrones. Jon Snow shares all the characteristics of Beowulf, such as self-sacrificing for the common good, being abnormally strong, and having natural leadership skills.
personal danger. It is very difficult for Scout to see that greater courage is often required
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
Bravery is where people have a lot of courage to maybe sacrifice something for someone. There has been a lot of bravery throughout the world, and many people do it differently. Also bravery can be someone who does it when others don’t expect it to happen. Like in the book The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, the spiders captured the dwarves and Bilbo saved them, and led the spiders away from the dwarves. Such as the quote” I shall draw the spiders off, if I can; and you must keep together and make it in the opposite direction “( Tolkien, 165). Bilbo shows bravery because he led the spiders away from the dwarves, so the spiders wouldn’t hurt them. Bravery is someone who steps up when no one else wants to, and does things for others rather than worry about
