CACREP was found in 1981 by the American Personal Guidance Associations (Brief Orientation). The purpose of its creation was to oversee accreditation of counseling and related educational programs. Since 1981, CACREP has focused on revising every 7-year basis, revision committee are charged to examine the standards for areas of potential redundancy, lists within standards, and over-prescriptiveness (Urosky, 2013). Though CACREP has overcome milestones, it still encounters the challenges of licensure portability and counselor identity unity.
Currently, all 50 states license professional counselors, but not all state licensing requirements are the same. CACREP has attempted to move towards licensing portability, but there are challenges, such as having set standards and reevaluating the state licensing requires. CACREP standards represent a few of the elements of most state licensing board requirements (Urosky, 2013). The lack of licensing portability is due in part to “complexities in the legislative process, as well as the danger in reopening licensing statutes, state boards often chose living with outdated and, in some cases, substandard requirements rather than risk problems associated with proposal to amend a statute” (Mascari and Webber, 2013).

Another responsibility given to a faculty member is the academic unit leader for counselor education. This faculty member has the responsibility of coordinating the counseling programs, responding to inquiries responding to inquiries regarding the overall academic unit, providing input and making recommendations regarding the development of and expenditures from the budget, providing or delegating year-round leadership to the operation of the program and receiving release time from faculty member responsibilities to administer the academic unit (CACREP, 2016c).
CACREP accredited programs are on an ongoing evaluation of the programs credentials.
