In Melanie Scruggs article “Costs will be too great if Houston doesn’t recycle” Melanie discusses many topics surrounding recycling such as landfills, mining, and waste facilities and how they are polluting Houston heavily. Personally I agree with Melanie Scruggs claim that if recycling is very important to the community, and we should all work together to recycle more.
Although many people believe that pollution is a huge issue not just in Houston but around the world others beg to differ. According to an article titled Benefits of Recycling written by Susan Weber discusses how recycling can help reduce pollution. In Weber’s article she discusses how recycling aluminum saves 95% of energy usually used to make aluminum, steel saves 60%, plastics save 70% and glass saves 40% when recycling. Recycling also effectively decreases the size of landfills, many states have set goals to reduce waste that are sent to landfills by 40 to 50 percent. Cities and counties have set up recycling programs which have resulted in 70 million tons of garbage diverted away from landfills yearly. Recycling also generates less air and water pollution because the trash is not being burned or left to rot in giant landfills until they are to be burned or put in compact boxes which are then buried. For example, making recycled paper creates 74 percent less air pollution and 35 percent less water pollution than making paper directly from trees. In Scruggs article she discusses how the recycling industries also create more jobs which affects the economy in a positive way. Many people do not think about how the economy benefits from recycling but recycling creates new jobs that involve collecting, processing, and preparing recycled material, paper mills, thrift stores, computer refurbish stores, and many more jobs.
