For many years there have been discussions about corporate social responsibility (CSR). It is evident that individuals have been concerned with the way business conduct themselves when it comes to CSR and ethics. Not only what they can do with their products and services but what they can give back to society. Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop, talks about what should be most important. She states, “The business of business should not be about money, it should be about responsibility. It should be about public good, not private greed.” (The Body Shop, 2012)

Lego is well known in about 130 countries and it was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen in Billund, Denmark. (Lego Group, 2015) With the Lego brand being well known throughout the world they facilitate children’s love of creativity and play. If someone was to look on to their website, www.lego.com they will find a wealth of information on this family owned business. Their code of conduct is one that reads like a children’s book. Their corporate social responsibility incorporates the values and most of all product safety which is widely known throughout the Lego companies, factories, and suppliers. They have a code of conduct, just like most major companies, but what is different is that they hold 3rd party audits to ensure they are adhering to this code. It starts with the ownership and management all the way down to the suppliers. Each person that has anything to do with Lego sees this code and signs away on the agreement. As the 3rd party auditors come around to each of the different areas around the world they are checking to ensure compliance. In one such instance a supplier in China was not compliant with Lego’s code and would not comply with it Lego pulled out until such a time that they will comply. This supply company was making workers work 4 times more than the legal overtime and then punish them when they needed to use the restroom. They would work 6-7 days a week with very little pay and then not pay them for weeks. (Chamberlain, 2011) Upon looking at their factories Lego uses robots to manage the day to day nitty gritty operations. By using robots the safety factor is taken out to a degree because they is no life loss is something catastrophic happens. The employee level of motivation and satisfaction is what Lego uses to ensure that they are doing the right thing. Ethics audits would ensure that Paradigm Toys is performing ethically internally with all areas of their business. It would provide a time to make sure that employees understand what is expected of them ethically. In areas that need improvement a plan could be discussed so that management knows what needs to be changed and how to change it. Our week five case study, Mattel and Toy Safety, involves toy safety inspection and product recall concerns among outside contractors. In 2007, the infamous toy company, Mattel, recalled a very large number of toy products covered with lead-based paint that were manufactured in China. Mattel responded to the massive toy recall by increasing the testing of all products and reassuring its customers that they will take affirmative action to correct the recall issues as soon possible. In my opinion, I believe Mattel acted in a socially responsible and ethical manner regarding the safety of it toys because as soon as Mattel was aware of a European merchant finding lead paint on their toy products, Mattel conducted an immediate investigation.
