Corporate Social Responsibility began its rise in popularity in the late 1960s as part of the Civil Rights movement, but it seems to be critical to companies now more than ever. Although everyone seems to agree that it is a hot topic surrounding businesses right now, what we cannot seem to agree on is if it is “right” for companies to stand firm on their corporate social responsibility policies or if businesses should just focus on turning profits. This response aims to give two opposing looks at social responsibility by providing three reasons to go with Company A, that could essentially care less about corporate social responsibility, and conversely, three reasons to go with Company B, where corporate social responsibility is important and a vital part of success.
The first and foremost reason to support a company that is not a firm believer in corporate social responsibility is the by questioning the motives of companies who are. When most look at companies with strong stances on CSR they become overwhelmed with the warm and fuzziness of a company that is giving back. However, they rarely stop and think to themselves, “why are they really doing this”. To give without compassion falls along the same lines of not giving at all and this is where most companies go wrong; they forget the emotion behind philanthropy. The company is there to make money, but it also tries to appear to meet the public expectation of acting ethically. To customers and employees, that can simply come across as calculating and superficial. That’s why the CSR activities often do not ring true from the outside looking in .

One hot button topic right now is gay rights in the workplace and believe it or not even in today’s generally accepting society, there are still companies out there who do not support gay rights and it is thus reflected in their company benefits. Companies like Urban Outfitters even carry their oppression deeper than gay rights. From racism to only having two women on the board of directors (one of whom is the president and founder’s wife), to ripping off independent designers by stealing their ideas, Urban Outfitters can also add anti-gay sentiments to their list . When investing in companies such as these you are supporting their cause and making their voice louder. By taking a step back and seeing the bigger picture, it is arguably a safer bet to invest your money in companies that care about the people that are turning the profits for them.
