Conversation in Communities Conversation is the interactive exchange of ideas by spoken words between two or more people. Throughout the day people interact with others through small talk. Conversation is crucial in forming a community because it allows people to form relationships with others in their general area. A community is a group of people that share common interests. In some cases communities are formed by people who live in a specific geographical location. Without conversation many communities, large or small, would eventually drift apart and everyone would be divided. The major key in bringing communities together is face-to-face, direct conversation with other people in a community. Face-to-face conversation allows for humans …show more content…
They can be described as the informal gathering places that all have different external appearances, but their aspects are all the same by serving the needs of the people in the community. Cafes, coffee shops, bookstores, bars, hair salons, and other hangout places in a community are all considered third places. In The Great Good Place Oldenburg explains how third places give people the opportunity for new relationships and experiences. Places such as a bar or restaurant are centered around conversation, and the reasons people visit these places is to be social. People in the community are drawn together by the food, atmosphere, and sporting events that are offered in these neutral grounds. Third places enable people to be themselves and build new relationships with people in an informal setting. Communities are strengthened because the neutral grounds welcome every individual in the area to enjoy themselves while creating new bonds by direct conversation …show more content…
The telescope explains how people show more compassion towards something that is closer to them rather than something far away. Conversations with fewer people tend to be more meaningful because everybody can hear what is being said and the chance to express their thoughts. In a big room with lots of people, conversation is harder to follow because the distance makes them less interested. Conversation in a big city is going to be way different than conversation in a small town. Since everyone knows everyone in a small town, everywhere you go there will be someone you know and talking to them is the polite thing to do. In cities with a larger population, it is impossible to know everybody therefore conversation there will tend to be more limited and will not be as personal. Conversation can differ depending on the
A Discourse Community is a group of people whose members share the same goals and use mechanisms to communicate with each other through an acquired, specific lexis that enables individuals to attain goals with the help of other expert and intermediate members.
When a person is asked what he or she knows about discourse community, they might not have any idea of what that means. However, they are probably involved in more than one discourse community. Discourse community in a general definition means that a number of people who have the same interests, values, concerns, or goals. The discourse community term spanned to include everything from religions and morals to sports and games. In all these various kinds of discourse communities, there are some common fundamental forms of communication that participate in keeping these groups related like written regulations, requirements, instructions, and schedules. Being a
Communication is key is any society. If we were unable to communicate with one another then how could our society grow and get better.
In Ray Oldenburg’s piece The Problems of Place in America, he concludes that communities lack the “third place”, which is a public space in communities outside the home and workplace that serve as a common ground. Oldenburg defines the third place as “a generic designation for a great variety of public places that host the regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms of home and work.” (51) Coffee shops fall under this description of the third place because they attract people of all ages for various reasons; this includes serving as a place to meet up with friends and family, do homework, and regularly host events like poetry slams and live band performances.
“Why would humans communicate with each other in the first place?” is a good question to consider when exploring this topic. The biggest and most significant benefit of communication is the fact that communication is the primary medium of transferring knowledge and information between people, leading to advancement throughout all of humanity. Through a basic survival lens, people could talk to others to tell them where there might be a potential food source or a potential water source. People would also communicate and warn each other about predators. Then, as language evolves and times change, people would communicate less about biological needs and more about ideas. Through the sharing of ideas, multiple people could work together to bring such ideas into fruition, which is still relevant today where people share an idea they have hoping to inspire others to share their vision and work with them to accomplish their goal. Communication at this point in human history would also be used as a method of connecting with other people. “Brain coupling … is the means by which we understand each other … Evidence for synchrony in two people’s insulae suggests that in good communication, two individuals come to feel a single, shared emotion as well, one that is distributed across their two brains” (Fredrickson 112). The connections formed between people are an integral part of what makes us human, and we owe part of our own individuality to the interactions we have with other people. The world as we know it today would not be possible without communication and sharing information between other people. Through communication, people can band together, form societies, and rely on these societies to make their lives easier; and in doing so, society becomes a deep-seated part of human life and
A community: otherwise a group of people who share common culture and heritage a populace, an alliance, an association, a neighborhood, a district, a society. A dictionary definition is what the population settles for as far as the context where they consider themselves as apart of a community. The word community in the 14th century, had derived from the word “common,” in that time, meaning fellowship in a ‘community’ of relations or feelings. However, the term then became used concretely as to pertain to a body of fellows or townsmen. It is vital though, that the youth involves themselves genuinely in a community, and not assume that they’ve done so simply by physically moving into one. Such a task means a challenge, however, through awareness and inspiration, the benefits of being apart of a community are within reach.
Discourse communities play a big role in life and how humans interact in general. A discourse community refers to a group of people who have language, life patterns, culture, and communication in common with each other. The idea of a discourse community has also been used to bring people of different orientations together, like family members, students, or committees. All of these types of people might have different standards of living, like their level of income, education, and work abilities. Discourse community can also refer to a speech community, because the main feature of a discourse community is communication. A discourse community can include groups of different regional areas that may or may not share norms and living patterns
Every individual is a component of some type of discourse community. A discourse community is a group of people who work to achieve a set of common goals through a unique form of terms and conditions. Discourse communities are often confused with speech communities. The difference between the two is that “a discourse community recruits its members by persuasion, training or relevant qualification” (Swales 220) rather than gaining members through birth, or accident. Discourse communities have a “reasonable ratio between novices and experts” (Swales 222) and different genres of communication that are used to progress towards the group’s goals. Another characteristic is the use of a unique lexis, or vocabulary, that sets the community apart from
A general definition of a discourse community is the different groups of people one socializes with, either voluntarily or obligatory. I believe that membership in a discourse community holds more value than any ordinary friend group. A “discourse community” is a group of people who share knowledge of a particular topic, similar backgrounds and experiences, values, and common ways of communicating. Gee defines discourse communities as a “form of life which integrates words, acts, values, beliefs, attitudes, and social identities as well as gestures, glances, body positions, and clothing” (Downs 484). According to Swales, there are six characteristics that mak...
Community is like a Venn diagram. It is all about relations between a finite group of people or things. People have their own circles and, sometimes, these circles overlap one another. These interceptions are interests, common attitudes and goals that we share together. These interceptions bond us together as a community, as a Venn diagram. A good community needs good communication where people speak and listen to each other openly and honestly. It needs ti...

A discourse community is a group of people involved in and communicating about a particular topic, issue, or in a particular field. In other words, it is a group of people who have similar backgrounds, language, and values. They share an interest in certain topics, share a body of knowledge about those topics, and possess a common vocabulary for discussing those topics. According to “The Concept of Discourse Community,” by educator and researcher John Swales, there are six characteristics that make up a discourse community. They are common public goals, mechanisms of intercommunication among members, participatory mechanisms to provide information and feedback, utilizing one or more genres in communication, a specific lexis, and a threshold
There are written and read conversations taking place this very moment. The written conversation is one that happens between me (ongoing thought- conversation) and what is written onto paper. The read conversation takes place when a person, other than me, picks up what I’ve written and reads it. Thought-conversation is going on in my writing to you today; there are some going on in collegiate assembly halls, and in the conscious minds of many. However, I cannot—nor can you at the moment—read (make believe you’re not reading this right now---oops, I’ve just Ong’ed you) or hear most of these arguments, debates, agreements, disagreements, assertions that carry on. If that is true we are fine for the moment. Granted, one is standing adjacent to and overhearing an English seminar that is discussing and synthesizing the views and works of a range of the most influential modern theorists of the humanities and social sciences. This confined seminar (audience) is expected to interact with, value, debate, and/ or construct opinions for or against a text—thus leading some to new thought-conversational thought processes. This, however, excludes the standby-audience member, the reader-listener, as an active participant of the dominant- authoritative discourse from that seminar. Hence, the author’s (the professor) methodology creates a specific, yet unrestrained, “aimed-towards them” discourse and not for the standby reader-listener. “His” audience (who says that an audience is his anyway?) will have to later “write”, “talk” and “think” about texts.
Conversation is defined as an “informal interchange of thoughts, information, etc., by spoken words; oral communication between persons” (“Conversation”). This informal talk gives people the opportunity to open up to others, analyze other’s perspectives, and share ideas and interests. Conversation is an intimate experience that initiates bonds between all who are involved. These bonds unite people, creating a sense of community. A community is described as a group of people that live in the same place or have common interests. In a community, people are proactive and are involved. Also, they truly care about the wellbeing of a common interest or activity. Conversation helps to bring people together in a community by giving a voice to all who are involved and uniting all as one.
