After spending all of her 15 years bouncing from one foster family to another in Portland, Oregon, Lux decided it 's time to take control of her life and become an emancipated minor. Her journey through the legal system leads Lux to her biological parents, Cate Cassidy and Nate Bazile, who had a one-night stand back in high school. Although they haven 't seen each other in 15 years, it doesn 't take Cate and Nate long to fall into the same relationship they had as teenagers. However, when a judge decides that Lux isn 't ready for emancipation, the judge grants temporary joint custody to Cate and Nate, they agree to try to get past the arguments and awkwardness and make an attempt to give Lux the family she deserves. In the beginning of the television show Lux is trying to find her biological parents because her court date for emancipation is coming up and she needs legal papers signed. The defense mechanism Cate Cassidy shows is Projection. Projection is defined as projecting unwanted feeling onto other people. Cate shows projection by flirting with Nate while knowing she has a Fiancé waiting for her at home. They hook up, and she wakes up in total shock and starts yelling at Nate and says “what happened last night was a total fluke”, she runs out of the bedroom and says, “I am not you and this never happened". This is projection because Cate is attracted to Nate but denies it. And puts all her feelings onto him as if Nate has feelings for her. They feel reconnected because they finally feet to talk about the past in a mature way. But of course things get heated and Cate finds herself confused because she want to be a happy family, yet she has a fiancé that is ready to build that with
