Lifespan development means to age-related changes that occur from the day of birth, throughout a persons ' life, into and during old age. During this course I learn a lot of new concepts, the most interesting thing that I learn was the contributions that Piaget left in the field of lifespan and development. Piaget was a wonderful man that was born in 1896 in Switzerland. He was interested in the natural and biological world at a very young age. He studied at the University of Zurich he published two philosophical articles that he then later dismissed as adolescent confusion. Piaget was the first psychologist to make a systematic study of cognitive development.

His major contributions include important observational studies of cognition in children, a theory of cognitive child development, and a series of creative exams to reveal different cognitive skills.
The theory are different from others theories in several ways, Piaget is concerned with children, rather than all learners. He focuses on development, rather than learning per se, so it does not address learning of information or specific behaviors. He proposes discrete stages of development, marked by qualitative differences, rather than a gradual increase in number and complexity of behaviors, concepts, ideas, etc.
The objective of the theory is to describe the mechanisms and processes by which the baby, and then the child, develops into an individual who can reason and think using hypotheses. To Piaget, cognitive development was a progressive reorganization of mental processes as a result of biological maturation and environmental experience. Children construct an understanding of the world around them, and then experience discrepancies between what they already know and what they discover in their environment. One beneficial way Piaget’s theory helps the children is it creates an environment of support for the students. This is a key point in Piaget’s cognitive theory which is called scaffolding. Scaffolding is a teaching style that provides assistant from peers, teachers and family members. This allows students to be assisted by well-educated adults, or peers, to provide clear direction and decrease students’ confusion. Another useful technique Piaget’s theory is being used in the classroom is group activities. He wanted students to be more involved with hands on activities, social interaction and to explore different scenarios of the environment when it came to learning. Piaget (1936) was the first psychologist to make a systematic study of cognitive development. Piaget placed great importance on the education of children. According to Piaget, children are born with a basic mental structure on which all learning and knowledge is based. They challenge the behaviourist theory as most of their research was done on animals and is missing knowledge. The implications of this theory are that not only should we be interest in the answer the learner gives but also the method of how they got there. I find that due to the gaps in the learner’s education, they may be missing important parts that they have had to find out for themselves these methods are not always the easiest ways of calculating. I try and make it as stress free as possible so will demonstrate other methods that may be easier for them. Piagets theory accepts that children go through the same development stages but that they may go through at different times, I ensure I make effort to cater for these different paces and ensure tasks are differentiated to accommodate this. There are three basic components to Piaget’s Cognitive Theory: Schemas; Equilibration, Assimilation, Accommodation; and the Stages of Development. Piaget obtained his theories by questioning the children about their thinking and from directly observing them. He was more interested in how they arrived at their answers and less interested in whether the children would answer correctly. Piaget viewed intelligence as an extension of biological adaptation that has a logical structure. One of the central points of his theories was of epigenesis. This is that growth and development occur in a series of stages, each of which is built on the successful mastery of the previous stage.

He was an inspiration to many who came after and took up his ideas. ...people get older from infant age all the way to death. Even though the stages stop at the fourth one, it does not mean that the intellectual learning stops. Adulthood is from the time you exit the concrete operational stage all the way until it is impossible for you to learn anymore. Although some adults do stop developing intellectually, some do not. Continued intellectual development in adults depends solely on the accumulation of knowledge in a person. I believe that what Piaget states in his stages of development are very accurate and quite logical.
